I don't like giving diagnostics over the phone either. In my experiences, the 'client' is saying one thing, and really the computer is doing something else because they don't understand what the computer is doing, and you don't understand what the 'client' is telling you, even after you've played '20 Questions' with them. I prefer a visual experience, get them to SHOW me the problem so I can start the troubleshooting process...

I agree 100% i do not like to give diagnostics over the phone as too many times i have listened to the client then got to look at the machine to find it is something completely different to their explanation.

The only thing I offer at no charge is "free pick up and delivery" for a PC that needs repair.

No-fix no-fee is always a guarantee. And over the 20+ desktop and laptops ive repaired this month, theres only been one that I couldn't fix. And because my client trusted me so much, he let me keep the laptop for spare parts. It's still sitting here as is, can't seem to get it working. If anyone wants to help me with it I'd be really appreciative of their help, I'll head up a new forum about when I wake up. It may be a good learning experience for everyone, who knows; knowledge is power

a customer would have to abduct and torture me to get a free diagnosis out of me. Admittedly when I first started I was to quick to jump the gun id sometimes give it to them.

But generally I find the customer isn't giving you all the info so why would I want to be liable for an unpaid unseen diagnosis?

Just say "I WOULD HAVE TO SEE THE PATIENT".

I offer free checkups for any pc in the house other then the reason I am going out to a clients home. So if I am going out for a Wireless setup I do a free pc checkup. Basically I verify its maintenance health... if it has all its updates .. if its malware free and I verify their av is working properly at all. If I find a bunch of issues on that machine I offer to take care of it for a fee. We offered that deal for a client after we setup their wireless network. They produced 6 laptops like a magic. We ended up taking that one service call charge and adding enough service to quintuple what we were making on the original service visit.
