I cannot find a straight forward and tested answer to this question on the net anywhere, so I may as well ask.
If I purchase the Vista Ultimate OEM media, will I be able use this media to reinstall user's Vista installations using their OEM branded (Dell, HP, etc.) to their PC? Along the same lines, if the above statement works, would I need separate 32-bit OEM Vista Ultimate and a separate 64-bit OEM Vista Ultimate to be able to cover both of the cases where customers need Vista reinstalled on the original PC for either 32 or 64 bit situations? Does the Vista Ultimate OEM media able to reinstall a OEM version of Basic, Home, etc. as long as its the same 32 vs 64 type? Last question, although no one may have an answer to this...was the version of Vista Ultimate that they gave away at last year's MS event, OEM or retail? It was in a cardboard case with no yellow sticker, but rather a code that one must activate, and then receive a serial via email... |

I have a Vista Ultimate OEM disk 32 bit and I have installed Home and Basic on a few PCs using it. If I recall correctly one was a Dell and one was a HP. If you don't enter a product key during setup it then prompts you to choose the version of Vista you want to install. When in Windows you can then enter the product key. If you enter the key during setup then it should pick the correct version for you but I had it say invalid product key on a couple of installs so I always leave out the product key and manually choose now. Not had any problems with the key being accepted within Vista itself.
32bit and 64bit are separate media for OEM. I think retail comes with both though.
