The only thing to make Vista come off worse is that it is following the version of XP we have now which works great Vista does not have an ME to follow to show that its flaws are no worse then XPs flaws in its beginning.
Thats kind of my point. XP works great. There was no need for Vista. It offered no useful features over XP, so whats was the point?
I strongly disagree with the comment that Vista's flaws are no worse than XP when it came out. I had maybe 2-3 people want to go back to 98-2000 from XP when it was new. Now I get that many people per week wanting to downgrade to XP from Vista. Also after the first SP XP was a very solid OS. SP1 has come for Vista and there have been a few improvements but not many. Its still not even close to XP in terms of compatibility, stability or speed.

I agree that XP SP1 did more for XP then Vista SP1 and Im not going to tell anyone to go out and upgrade to Vista. I don't argue that Vista doesn't really provide anything new to users either. I simply argue that there is little reason to make an effort to avoid Vista. My choice between Vista and XP is still XP unless there is a need for a feature of Vista. I just do not see any problems with Vista yet I will agree that it has higher system requirements. Vista seems to follow the trend of how MS OS system requirements have increased at what seems an exponential rate.

I doubt these are genuine screenshots.

From what I have read so far, Windows 7 is supposed to be a complete deviation from anything MS have done before..

Yeah, so was Vista. Does anyone remember drooling over those screen shots of Longhorn? All the promise of a great OS and we got stuck with Vista.
The only way I can see Windows 7 being any good is if Microsoft starts fresh from a clean slate, and with a Unix base. This among other things.

i think vista is ment o be the "ME" and windows 7 is ment to be the "xp" in this situation from what ive heard microsucks are using vista as a bases for what not to do next time being the flop of an OS that it is. that being said ive had minimal trouble with it and for me it feels like xp with a face lift. apart from its obnoxiously high sys requirments its not given me too much trouble apart from the odd issue here and there and sucking the absolute life out of frame rate for higher end games but that comes down to the fact that most gfx card drivers for vista arnt up to scratch yet.
tl;dr vista isnt as horrible as some people say but i am hoping windows 7 will be better and please lets not turn this into a childish fanboy thread.

Depends on who you are, and what you are trying to do with it I guess. Most people I hear say Vista is not so bad are people who have never been on a truly fast XP machine.
I do think you have a very good point about Vista being the ME and windows 7 being the XP. Who knows, maybe thats the whole idea. " we'll give them a little something until the real thing comes out, and maybe make a few million in the process"

My experience is this. If you are a hard-core user, you will despise Vista. But for the general population that just uses a computer to run a few games, browse the web, get a recipe, check email... Vista is fine. Do I like Vista? Not really, do I recommend it? Nope... but honestly, I tell them it's ok for the general user.

Thats more or less my same view and I still can't view Vista as an ME due to the fact Vista as an OS is stable where as ME was never a stable OS.
