Acer gets good scores

We have sold acer laptops in our shop for a long time. I always thought the price to value ratio was good. I sometimes get annoyed by people who say they are junk just because they are lower cost. I always tell my customers that all the major manufacturers use similar parts and all have similar issues. I had a client recently reference consumer reports magazine saying acer was top in regards to failure rate. Food for thought.

I'm glad somebody else is a fan :)

I'm almost all Acer now, both laptops and desktops. Even with the refurbs I've never had one fail me yet (fingers crossed).

Still wouldn't touch Gateways or eMachines with a ten-foot pole, though.

I find them to be junk... It's not the price that's the issue.
It's the hands on experience.

Now their monitors is a completely different story, no issues there.
I owned an Acer Aspire 5050 whose motherboard failed within 1 year and Acer refused to repair it. I knew others with the same model having the same problem.

When I worked with my last employer the newer computers that were brought in with hardware issues were all Acer's.

I don't touch them for anything other than monitors.
EDIT

I feel the same about gateway and emachines

I'm also an Acer fan I've had my laptop for 7 years, simply upgraded the ram and Os. I always recommend them to friends and clients, Dell and Lenovo for business clients.

My first experience with them was horrible. I picked out my sisters first computer way back (PII 200Mhz 3.4GB hd - $3,500 - it was a beast then!!! :D) and it turned out to be a real dog especially compared to my Dell I bought 2 years later. Since then I've gotten 2 monitors and they are fantastic, especially when taking price into consideration. I picked up a 23.6" touchsreen that was refurbished at a local shop for $175 about 4 years ago (that was an AMAZING price then and they now sell for $250 used!..)

Does anyone know what hardware manufacturers they partner with (OEM Mobo, HD, etc??) I know that Dell used to use Foxconn MB's and such..

When I did warranty repair (onsite contract work) I don't think I ever had an Acer call and that was one of the brands my company covered. IDK if that says they have a low market share or they don't have many failures though..

Most Windows laptops suck.

Acers big problem is that they are usually the $350-$450 computers at Staples. Best Buy, and Walmart.

what's wrong with a basic i3 laptop for $400? That is plenty of power for what 90% of the public uses. Myself too, I just run an i3 desktop at home(with an ssd)

Personally, I've found very little to like in most consumer level systems. I've sold hundreds of Acers, but the Veriton, not the Aspire. There are some very good reasons that the major players have both consumer and business class lines, and the biggest is quality of components and stability.

Lenovo, all day for me.

Yup, only laptops I've ever owned and never had any problems with any of them. Have pretty much converted my whole family to them, and no issues with theirs either.

I have a customer who bought a new Acer laptop based on it being the "best value" laptop in a consumer reports list or something. He seems to like it, and has only had to bring it in for virus removals haha.

They seem like the best of the "cheapo" laptops. I'd probably rate them right next to Toshibas, and like, miles ahead of HP.

Build quality is excellent + they're the only brand of laptop that I actually like and make use of the pre-installed software.

I sell Lenovo laptops. I really dont have alot of trust in Acer. I think the Lenovo's are better quality than Acer.

So, My top 3 for worst laptops (1 being the worst) is:

1. emachines
2. Gateway
3. HP

I didnt include acer in the list as they are positioned for the low end laptop market. You gotta expect some problems. But emachines, Gateway and HP are true JUNK IMHO.

Yep. I have an i5 with 16gb of ram and samsung ssd. I swear most days I could get by with just a pentium dual core and 3 or 4 gb of ram as long as I had the ssd lol. What a difference it makes.

This is truth.

ANY manufacturer's $300 laptop is junk. Do not care what anybody says. Acer's better PCs seem just as solid as any other manufacturer.

That said, even Ferrari's break down just like Escorts...

I picked up an Acer Aspire Desktop 3 years ago at Walmart. Came with a quad core AMD A6 @2.2GHZ APU, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, USB3.0, DVDRW, and 2xPCIe slots. I paid $399 for it.

I added a PCIe RAID card, upped to 16GB of Crucial RAM, added 4x1TB WD Red, a happauge 2550 tv tuner. It is now my home Linux server, has been running 24/7 for 3 years.

It hosts
Mythtv
SAMBA Shares (Using Kerberos5)
NFS Shares (mounted as /home/username for the various linux laptops in the house)
PXE Server
Minecraft Server
DLNA server via PS3Mediaserver
Local test bed for my Joomla pages
My weather station with Weewx
ScreenConnect
Back up with rsync and mirrored RAID

Up to 5 people use this server at a time on a regular basis for any of the given roles and I have only once had to stop a service because of interference with performance of another. Mythtv transcodes at night and I had a LAN party with 12 people locally on my Minecraft Server when it started.

I used to hate Acer, literally loathed their cheap laptop and desktop lines. This server project has turned me around. This desktop was never ever ever meant to be a server. I just one day decided I needed a test bed for Joomla and I started adding things from there. It has served me extremely well. Soon I will be upgrading my more essential business related roles to a real HP Proliant Server. :)

Acer

I will agree my opinion of them has been changing. With that being said, I still prefer to work with Dells. Every company makes some crap, hardware does fail, but as a whole, I look for whose crapware is easiest to remove.

Have not found a OEM manufacturer that made something worthwhile. HATE the little red knob of lenovo...but I have known tons of ppl who swear by them...just not my cup of tea...but other than that I like lenovos too...except there's a TON more stuff to uninstall.

It's all a crap shoot no matter who you go with. Some more than others in terms of quality. Hell, I've seen Dell Servers be completely dead right out the of the box...had to RMA the 2 of the drives as it was throwing errors. It happens.

Does eMachines even still make laptops anymore? I don't think I've seen one in the shop that hasn't been at least a few years old in awhile.
I think so, they are the really low end, so you won't see one for over $300 I believe.

Acer to me is the one of the worst PC makers out there. I view them as the company that cuts too many corners when it comes to PC's (although a lot are guilty of making crappy computers).

I only like recommending Lenovo, Dell (Business Class), Sony, and Asus. If spending 1,000 or more, I would say the hardware is more likely to be good enough (Acer S7 is one of the elite Ultrabooks).

About Monitors, yeah that doesn't matter. There are only a few companies that manufacture monitors. Acer buys the panel and puts their logo on it... who cares really.

If you like using a PC, Toshiba and Acer are tied as the most reliable brands for laptops

I disagree with both based on my experience. Granted its pretty rare for me to repair laptops in person.

I do enjoy working on those Acer laptops where most of the back is a single plate that comes off.

Back in the early days that I got into the field...I had always assumed they were junk. This was due to the cheap models, like the Aspire desktops, being sold at huge cheap chain stores like Walmart.

...and yes, those were junk. But so were other models of computers typically sold at Walmart and other cheap big chain stores like Radio Shack....anyone remember the IBM Aptivas? IBM computers certain were not junk....yet those Aptiva home computers were!

Anyways...when I got into the computer field, my first job was working at this software company that wrote a point of sale/back office program for higher end gift shops. I installed their software on computers, built the networks, whole point of sale setup, shipped them out to their clients. When they sold new systems...they used Acer PowerPC lineup...which was the business grade models Acer made. Thousands of them went through my hands. They were really pretty good computers, reliable, robust, business grade. Pretty much the same computer under the hood as IBMs business desktop models of the time..the 300 series. I recall reading in a few places they shared the same ODM.

So...while most people don't know more than Acers home/residential line of computers...guess that's why they associate Acer with crap. All they've seen is the walmart models. They've not seen their business models. Has anyone here ever seen an Acer server? Yes...Acer made servers. Not bad ones either.

Back in the early days of Microsoft, Texas Instruments made laptops..and pretty decent ones. Acer bought up the laptop devision of Texas Instruments...which is why Acers mid and upper level models of laptops are actually pretty good.

Although we mostly sell Lenovo Thinkpad laptops and Dell Latitude and Precision laptops to our clients, for some clients on a budget, I've sold Acers laptops..and to be quite honest...have not had a problem with them.
