Hi all,

I have an old dell dimension 2400 on the bench at the moment. The customer wants it wiped and reloaded as its full of old software etc with very little they need saving/backed-up.

My difficulty is in reloading the office version he originally had, "Office 2003 Basic Edition", I know this was only available as an OEM install, but the customer does not have any of the original manufacturers discs (no surprise there), I've backed up the licence key for this but do not have an original source to reinstall it for them (this model does not have a recovery partition either).

Anybody got an image they could send me or any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Maurice

Sorted :-)

OK, got it sorted.

Having tried unsuccessfully to use the Student and the Small Business editions, I went back to google for another try and finally found the answer I needed.

It seems the Standard edition will accept the Basic editions key, despite the Standard edition contain the addition of Powerpoint.

I got a copy of the Standard edition at http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/2/3/6233A257-16BD-4C8D-BF4C-6FA59AF9213A/OfficeSTD.exe

and it is happily installed, activated and updated.

Note: It would not not activate over the net, but the telephone activation went without a hitch.

Job done :)

You might already know but the Forum Rules were updated not long ago:

No Links to Pirate Material or Assisting with Its Use
Such as illegal torrents, copyrighted software ISOs, CD Keys or means to hack into software and/or hardware. No assisting on the forums with information to obtain or make use of pirate material.

We have beaten this subject to death and all agreed that Microsoft images are not piracy because if you are using the customers key they have the right to use the software.

We have had many discussions about downloading windows and office disks from torrent sites and I was at least under the assumption that there was nothing at all wrong with it.

Now it would be considered piracy if we where discussing how to use or get a hacked key or circumventing the activation or something like that but just obtaining the disks is not.

How did you find that, does Microsoft provide all of the different editions of office like this? This would make life so much easier just making a DVD with all of the past and present versions of office.

If you want to take this to task, take it up with Bryce. It's his forum and we are all his guests.
The OP was asking for an image of copyrighted software that Bryce's rules say is not a valid topic of discussion.

If you don't like the forum rules, take your posts elsewhere. Nobody, I believe, is holding you captive here.

Theres no reason to get offensive I was stating fact. Search the forum this subject has came up multiple times and its been a valid fact that everyone agrees that copying a disk is not piracy if your using the customers genuine license. The media its stored on means nothing, its the license that matters.

Now if he would have posted "Does anyone have a key that will work for office 2003" then yes I would have been the first to flame him off the board. And yes this is Bryce's form and I would love to here his take on this subject.

The initial request seemed entirely valid to me, there was no suggestion in his post that the OP was looking to install a pirate copy.

I've no idea if they provide any other editions in this manner. I was fortunate to find a direct link on another forum from someone with the same issue as I had, but no further links were provided, nor any information as to how this particular link was found - sorry.

BTW....
... it was never my intention to start off a row on the forums, and I thank those who have come to my defence. I certainly never had any intention of pirating or otherwise making illegitimate use of any materials, and the fact that Microsoft have the software available directly for download (albeit thru a somewhat obscure link) somewhat mitigates the question of passing a copyrighted item, when it turns out to be readily available.

Its a bit of a grey area. I suspect that there are EULA rules against the transmission/distribution of the Microsoft files. However, I know many techs see it as "something that doesnt hurt anyone, even Microsoft".

I would rather be on the side of caution since I am not sure one way or the other.
