I for one feel a thousand dollar cell phone is 100% bonkers, but in this (mostly) free world I really don't care what other people do with their money for the most part and especially if it doesn't impact me. Being a person who works in a "tech" field, having a smart phone is still only the slightest convenience for me. I can use the chat applications that my company uses, so that if I'm away from my home office desk, I can still be contacted fairly easy. A simple text message works the same way, and as stated above... a $20 walmart phone can do that. I just got my father a Casio Gzone Ravine 2 from eBay for $43. He loves it, it's rugged, very loud speaker, great call quality / reception, the battery easily lasts up to two weeks.......... its great. Only thing is that it isn't a smart phone. Oh well, $43 vs $1000? I'll let my laptop or desktop be smart and use the phone to call and text if it came to that.
I'm currently using a samsung galaxy S6 that I got for $300 in Feb of 16 (so we are coming up on two years). The battery life is crappy, but I work from home, have a wireless charger, wall chargers, and have car chargers (which are all of the "fast" variety save maybe the wireless one). Big deal. It's running the latest android, and does everything I need it to do.... even the "smart" stuff.
Again, I don't care what people do with their money. Personally, I'll be upgrading to a galaxy S8 when the S9 comes out. After selling off my S6 for whatever I can get out of it.... I should probably be back in the $300 range for the new phone. In two years I'll look to do the same again. I would just rather spend my money on other things, considering I don't feel I'm missing out on anything by using the S6 vs iPhone X.
