I am looking for a program that will do a file backup routine when a USB drive is plugged into the host computer. It would be preferential to have the option to incremental or differential backups.

Not that I've tried this but maybe use cobian set up the backup as incremental and see if you can set up a scheduled task in windows that is triggered by USB insertion. No idea if that's possible though ☺

WD Smartware that comes with MyBook and MyPassport drives does that. Whatever you go with, be sure to safely remove the device before disconnecting it. Next time you plug either of these devices in, it resumes the continuous backup it had been running before being removed/turned off.

Sorry.. I am looking for a piece of software that automatically launches a backup as soon as the backup drive is attached.
The customer has had previous encounters with the Cryptolocker "virus" and wants to have several lanes of backup. I already have a CrashPlan running to the premium backup server and to another computer on their LAN, but they also wanted to have a backup on a device that is "unplugged" from the target PC except to do backups. They thought a USB would be easiest, but I am having trouble finding a program that automates the backup so they don't have to start it manually.

But that's exactly what it does, as I explained. You have to set up the WD Smartware program to tell it to back up continuously, which drives/folders/files or file categories to include, but once that's done, any time you plug it in, it determines what changes/additions have been made and adds them to the back-up.

Cryoto can wipe out anything it sees, including the backup drive, so for best protection, it might be a good idea to back up the back-up using a system that is never connected to the internet or using a live CD.

One of the nirsoft usb tools can run a prog .bat on usb insert. There was a big thread on auto backups. With a dos device manager util to unload the drive.

You might want to look into Rebit. It will do both a file level backup of folders/locations that you designate, as well as a full system backup. It also does a file level backup to the cloud. When you plug in the external hard drive, it will back up everything since the last time that it was plugged in. Incidentally, the technology used for the full system backup was purchased and re-branded by Carbonite for their mirror image backup service. They also have a reseller program in which you can sell and monitor backup services to the client. www.rebit.com

Again I apologize, I was replying to the poster above your initial reply.

Thanks for the suggestion, it looks like a good fit.

sorry just read further down your already using crash plan. If you setup backup to a folder location - you maybe able to create a batch file script to move those files over to the USB maybe

Yea, I have looked at batch file solutions, but I don't think they would work as well as a software solution that has the automatic functionality built in. Now I am really torn between Rebit and Altaro, though I feel like the Rebit offering fits my needs better.

A couple of other advantages of Rebit is that you can essentially allow the customer to trial it for 30 days before you start getting charged for it. Also, you can sell it monthly or yearly, which makes it easy to include as a managed service offering. I add a buck or two per month on top of the base cost for monitoring, basically communicating to the client that I am keeping an eye on their backup to make sure that it's running. Rebit will send me alerts if the client hasn't backed up online or locally for x number of days.
