Is anybody backing up a remote/cloud server to an onsite Synology NAS?

I have a new client that has a 2008 R2 peer server at a cloud provider. I can't remember the name, but it's not one of the big common ones. Anyway they bought a 2-bay NAS and would like to perform backups to it. There is no VPN. Is there a way with the NAS to backup with some sort of agent or maybe WebDAV or something?

I have a few onsite Synology NAS's doing backups with Solarwinds Backup using the NAS as the local speed vault, but I've never tried backing up remotely like this.

They will have a static IP at the new office where the Synology will live.

How big is the installation? OS and data? I know it's more expensive but I'd just bite the bullet and spin up a cloud back up, as in data, server. I'd not trust doing a full restore from a local NAS. Of course someone like Datto may be able to do that.

Sounds like a square peg round hole.

I'm new to Solarwinds backup, but couldn't you set up a refurbished Windows server and run the backup recovery console on it. Then you'd have a frequently up to date copy of the whole machine.

File only or images? Database? Backup or one way sync? Versioning? What's to be backed up? What's the recovery plan?
So much more info needed.

This could almost certainly be done using Rsync. There are various versions and wrappers for Windows.

We won't be using Solarwinds Backup here. They aren't a managed client. At least not at this point.

This would be file only backup. No images or databases. Very basic. If recovery is needed, depending on the situation, we just restore the files or rebuild the VM and restore the data after.

Does Rsync work with cloud servers, not connected to the network the NAS is on, other than internet connectivity?
