We all get into a rhythm and routine of what we use. I used to use Usenet/Newsgroups all the time and now I use forums and basically forgot that usenet even existed. What I would like to do is create a list of all the features and functions which the Internet provides. This list could be great for any customer, with a description of the services available, so that they get the most out of their Internet experience.

I'll start with what I can think of and I'll add whatever anyone else posts so that it is all here on the first post - if that is OK with others.

I'm adding what I know or think - please add anything you think would be good for the topic. Please add more topics if you know of them - I'm sure there are a lot more than I can think of - even if they aren't very popular they could be important for some of use here who don't know or have forgotten.

Web surfing - Web pages, discussion forums, social media, business/personal sites, specialty sites for unique interests, News services, dating services, etc.

Streaming Video - Video on Demand (paid & free)

Streaming Audio - Internet Radio

Email - webmail, POP/IMAP, encrypted

Gaming - Play directly on websites or connect to servers from games you have purchased

Usenet/Newsgroups - discussion groups focusing on specific topics - kind of like forums

Instant Messaging - send an instant chat message to anyone on your chat network

VoIP - Internet Telephone capable of video conferencing - Skype is a big provider.

IRC - Internet Relay Chat

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) & torrent networks - file sharing from one user to another

Web Hosting - service to host anything web related

Remote computer access - access any computer connected to the Internet (with appropriate access)

Online backup - store your files online

Online applications - "cloud" based apps - like Google apps

VPN - A secured network which allows satellite locations to connect to a central network.

Remote Desktops - a desktop to which you can log in from anywhere with Internet eliminating the need to bring your machine with you.

Seedbox - store your P2P files on a high speed server for faster transfer times

hmm think you got pretty much all the things that initially came to mind except for online meetings, collaboration tools, evernote...yes evernote gets its own category :p

I didn't think this was still around. We used to have a satellite dish to download this stuff back in the early 90's. We would download almost the whole adult portion of the Usenet feed, process it into jpg/gif/etc files and then put them on a BBS. Made a lot of money doing that back then. ;)

I'm still quite active on usenet.
But I'm an old fart.

1.) The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another.
