Okay, So I have a MacBook Pro running Mavericks in the shop, customer ran out of room and wanted a bigger hard drive. So I tossed the old 320GB into my Aluratek Cloning Device and it does a sector to sector clone. I cloned it onto a 500GB HDD but of course when I put in the upgraded 500GB the mac only sees 319.21GB but under disk utilties it sees the 500GB so I go to partition section and pull down to extened the partition and click apply it gives me the standard message of the you are resizing this drive. and it does a 2 second scan and nothing changes.......

What can I do to get this thing to read the full 500GB without losing the data.

The usual way to go about it is to use disk utility to copy the partition on the smaller drive to a partition on the larger drive, assuming the drive is healthy.

As long as the original is running fine what I do is make a TM backup. If the target machine came with 10.7 or later you can boot up into recovery mode with the new HD and do a TM restore.

I've run into issues before with Disk Utility not being able to expand a partition. What I use these days is Paragon 15, using the automatic partition resizing feature. Works great.

Agreed, you really want to use 3rd party software. Disk utility doesn't always do the trick. Stellar Mac partition manager works well... I haven't had to do this for awhile but I believe it costs some money. gparted also is capable of doing this. It might be simplest to do the Time Machine trick though for the simplest solution as suggested above! I don't do a lot of cloning these days because I am a big fan of the fresh install.
