Computer will not turn off?

This is a new one on me. I have an IBM NetVista desktop I am working on. I am not sure of the specs, but it has a P4 in it, so it should not be too ancient... I finally got XP installed, and now need to hunt down drivers and such.

When I shut it down in SP Pro, it goes to the old splash screen that says it is now safe to turn off the computer. I have not seen that in a LONG time. If I press the (only) button on the computer, it just restarts. The only way to kill it is to unplug it.

Any ideas? The power button is not jamed.

Thanks.

Thanks for the tip generalj. I have to hold the button for around 8 secs. It starts to boot, I get the option to enter the BIOS or boot, and then it will shut down.

Odd. Would drive me crazy.

Thanks

I don't have too many options in the BIOS. ACPI can be S1 or S3, and it says S3 may not be supported... I can also change the IRQ of the ACPI, but I let windows handle IRQ stuff if possible.

As long as it powers down, it is ok. Someone will just have to keep on holding the button...

Thanks

Theres sometimes an option under 'Display properties' (advanced?), power Management that has a check box that says 'use advanced power management' that is unticked by default.

I cant see it on my box but it may have something to do with the type of mainboard or BIOS installed as to whether Windows includes it as an option. I'd guess yours has it in there somewhere.
