My wife has a system with the following motherboard and CPU:

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 905e CPU

We find the CPU fan is extremely noisy. I thought I could partially fix the problem with a more solid case, so I changed her whitebox case for an Antec Sonata II. It seems to have helped a little, but there's still a lot of noise emminating from the case. Any recommendations on a quiet fan/heat sink for this CPU/motherboard combination? Not too sure if any liquid cooling solution would fit in the Sonata case, haven't set up any liquid cooling systems before.

Cheers,

Charles

Hi Charles,

AMD CPU's have a feature called "cool n quiet" that can be adjusted in the bios settings. Fist thing I would do is make sure it is activated in the bios. You could be running the cooling fan full bore when its not necessary. This would make it sound loud.

There are alot of aftermarket cooling fan and heatsink options available. You can go liquid cooling but most people that are using LCing are overclockers. Iam assuming that you are not overclocking. Another point in LCing is that you have to be sure the radiator and fans will fit in your case.

I recommend a good after market cooling fan / heatsink replacement. If you stop by a site such as newegg you can read the reviews and make a decision on which would be best for your situation. The one point to keep in mind is the amount of space you have in the case - case width. Its always nice to have a nice cooling system installed but if you cannot close the case then its a problem.

Measure from the top of your exposed CPU to where the case will close (like a side panel closing) and keep that in mind when you look at coolers. Also, Check your memory slots and how they and pci / e slots will be affected.

Any aftermarket basic cooling system for AMD cpus should be fine for your situation.

I'd look into the Coolmaster Hyper 212 Evo that is a nice aftermarket CPU. It is known to be quite big so measure the case. But is perfect for the budget build. Goes for around $34.99 USD on Newegg

Thanks to both of you. I'm tempted to try the water cooling solution, but I think I'll grab that Coolmaster cooler, I saw it at our local shop for around the same as the Newegg price. With the extra money I would have put into a liquid cooler I'll use for a better PSU.

Thanks all.

I'll look again, but I think I set everything to AUTO and "Cool n Quiet" was on. I remember underclocking the CPU a few years ago (not OC'd now) but performance was terrible at 4 x 800MHz.

Right now there's no graphics card other than the onboard so I'll probably add one in the near future. It does seem a bit loud even idle.

Thanks again.

^ These are AWESOME! :D

Get this, then buy a second 120mm Coolermaster fan to mount on the other side of it (it comes with the mounts to mount a second fan!)

This way one fan pushes heat through the heatsink and the other fan pulls the heat out of it and blows it to the back of the case where it exits the case.

As mentioned though, measure your case because this is rather large!

I second the Hyper 212 EVO. Have it, completely awesome. Fits in my case by just a hair's width though :p

Lol Yeah I haven't picked it up yet since I just ordered a new graphics card and waiting for that to arrive. But that is my next upgrade since the heat will start to pick up in the case and the stock heatsink won't cut it.

EVO is nice though and like the user stated previously if you get another fan and set up the Push and Pull it makes it even better.

My favorite too. At the time, best price / performance cooler, and only $35! Got one in my system now :-)
