Creating HP recovery disks fail due to no DVD drive ?

I am working on a laptop that has a failing hard drive (what else is new:p) and the customer cannot locate his disks so I tried to make a recovery disk set before we lose the drive (I backed up as much data as possible alread).

However in the recovery manager after going through all the steps to create the dvd the software reports back that there is no DVD or CD drive on the machine capable of making a backup to.

That's weird because I can write to the drive in Windows and the drive is the original in the laptop and it definitly a DVDRW.

Anyone else experience this, where they cannot create the recovery disks due to the program not seeing a dvd drive but its there for everything else, including booting off of ?

did you have a writeable dvd in the drive when you tried making the recovery disks, the hp recovery program will say no dvd drive if there is no writeable media.

Strange, maybe it's due to the failing drive? Can you put this drive into another machine and see if it works when you boot to that drive?

No, its a laptop drive. But as I said it works fine under all other tests including bootup.

Tried that. At first yes, no disk, but then got out of the program put a disk in rebooted, tried again and same error.
