I'm part way through a 5 user SBS2011 to Office365 migration, email has been migrated and now time for SharePoint. I have installed OneDrive for Business on all computers and mapped the empty site. I now have 11GB (17,000 files) to migrate from the Server. I installed OneDrive on the Server and was just going to do a copy/paste and leave it to upload the data. Any tips or tricks i should be aware of?

If it's just one big file repository...sure copy just the files up. Did they mostly just use the file explorer of Sharepoint? And not really the other organized structure?
If they had a more complicated Sharepoint setup...I haven't done one of these yet (not a lot of SBS users really used Sharepoint deeply)....but we have one client that uses it thoroughly..and that migration is probably next year. Started looking a bit at migration tools..

You've probably seen us talk about MigrationWiz (now BitTitan) for Exchange to O365 migrations...they also have some other xxx==>O365 migration tools, including Sharepoint.

Back when looking I also liked the look of this tool...

OneDrive syncs as soon as detects changes in the monitored folders.
I just copied a picture to my OD pics folder...saw it turn white..and then back to blue saying done syncing. Copied another...it immediately did it again.

Yeolde - I think it is dependent on subscription level and I was referring to the sync out to the subscribed users/folders not the initial upload - I should have been more specific. I could be wrong after all but could swear I just skim read something on that being an issue a couple weeks ago.

I did a small office last year, 5 users, total of about 6000 files, maybe 3 gigabytes i think? They had the lowest available plan, which may have been the problem, but the initial upload was horrendous. We had a Comcast business connection, 50/20 at the time. We were getting dial-up speeds for the upload. It took forever, and we had to rename several files that had prohibited characters in the names, stuff like that. I should have looked into a migration tool, but it was basically a one-off for me, I haven't done one since.

They are still using it and it works ok, but they say it's slow.

Best advice I can give you is to read the support page below and understand the limits - you are pushing the total file upper limit with 17000 files - also be prepared for Onedrive to slow the workstations down a bit. Keep in mind that sync is not instant but is only once per hour if I remember correctly.

I have been donig more research into this after my test run at the weekend failed and it seems the limit is actually 5000 if you want to use the OneDrive for Business sync client. Can anyone confirm this? A 5000 file limit seems very small.

It is indeed 5000 for each sharepoint site you create. Onedrive itself is limited to 20K max however if you just share out the Onedrive folder and do not create a site.
