Right a Laptop takes DDR2 PC2-6400 memory modules and I want to upgrade... I've made an offer on some on eBay but noticed its DDR2 PC2-6400S...

So my question is, what is the difference and will my laptop work with the 'S' RAM?

Laptop is a Dell Vostro 1700 and I will be buying a new matched pair (2x 2gb)

Cheers

Here is some info on the different between so-dimm and dim

SO-DIMMS are often used in systems which have space restrictions such as notebooks, small footprint PCs (such as those with a Mini-ITX motherboard), high-end upgradable office printers, and networking hardware like routers.

Hopefully this will help out?

It'll work fine. Laptop DDR2 SO-DIMMs are often identified by having an "S" added to their name. As long as you are buying laptop memory and it DDR2 PC2-6400, you'll be ok.

Thank you, this is what I suspected, as you see the laptop modules advertised with and without the 's'. Having not done much with laptop hardware before I thought it would be wise to ask before spending money! :D

Please dont feed the Troll

16k_zx81,

  1. Thank you for your very helpful post.
  2. You are rude and not particularly welcoming.
  3. I offer web design and tech support in my local area, but having not done much with laptop hardware before I thought it would be wise to ask for clarification for upgrading my own laptop and this seemed like a nice friendly forum to ask... Until you came along.
Regards
Phill
