A friend's Dell Inspiron 1545 is complaining that the battery "can charge correctly but is reaching the end of it's useful life" and, of course, there are the usual dire warnings that the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse shall wreak vengence on the Earth if you dare to use anything other than a genuine Dell Battery from Dell.

Mind you, if it keeps the Four Horsemen at bay then I can see why Dell want £134 for it

I've never had to replace a Dell battery before but I assume that you don't really have to use the genuine thing do you? Can anyone recommend a reputable company in the UK for replacement batteries?

I have googled it of course, but the major problem I'm having is that (a) you can't readily tell who is reputable and who isn't, which is why it's nice to have a recommendation, and (b) I can't seem to find the right one.

It's for a Dell Inspiron 1545 and the battery is labelled up as being a GW240, 14.8V, 28Wh. The only replacements I can seem to find are also listed as being for an Inspiron 1545, also labelled as GW240, but only 11.1V.

Any clues or insights folks?

Good stuff! I tend to get quite a lot from ebay (only uk registered businesses) just because uts like a centralised search and price comparison all in one :)

Hard drives, screens, plastics - all on eBay ;)

Just got a replacement for an XPS 501 from them today. Never let me down.

Thanks Andy, now in my bookmarks list :)

However, I still can't get my head round the fact that the original battery says 14.8V, but drilling down to the particular model on that site shows four batteries, all of which are 11.1V and they actually say in the listings, in brackets, (replaces 14.8V version).

How does that work? That's a big voltage drop as far as I'm concerned.
