Hi

Need some input here, Its my 1st time doing a LCD panel replacement, and ran into issues:

I am in the process of replacing a LCD panel on a dell inspiron 1525 - i ran into a problem after the LCD was installed and confirmed to work- New panel was fairly easy to install. No problems with the inverter or backlight. The problem is the client stepped on his laptop- causing the cracked LCD and I think cracking the plastic in various areas inside that snap together plastic 'rings' and gold 'nuts' that hold the front bezel to the metal hinge. I put the laptop back together as completely as I could and the plastic would not snap together all the way- it was almost there but things didnt seem right-- plus the Vista desktop was also not displaying on the LCD anymore. Hmm...

So..I took it apart again to check LCD connections- they are good- I know the LCD is fine.. Inverter is fine etc..

Do I need to spend the ~$70 on a new front bezel including new hinges? I am hoping not to get myself into a hole here but it looks like I am going to have to tell him it is going to cost more than expected due to the hinge issues..

Hinges link

Looks like $50-70 would solve my problem as far as the hinge - Though any ideas on why the LCD would not show, I am hoping it is only the fact that everything is loose and will not go back together and once I get it screwed down tight with a new hinge that it will work fine.. If not I will be confused still..the backlight comes on but no video and I can hear vista boot and show desktop, and it displays fine on external monitor.

Thanks in advance
Ryan

look harder on ebay, you will find just the hinges you need for about 25 each set.

so do you have a good image on the LCD panel? your words are a bit confusing. You may need to check cable and the other end.
and make sure you got the right panel. just because it fits doesn't mean it is electronically compatible.

Could be that if you have press down on the bezel with to much force you may damaged the screen or the inverter. Take the laptop screen apart again and double check that the vga cable is connected and power on the laptop. If you are still getting no image on the screen then first check that the display is not set to external mode. Most laptops have a function key that changes display from laptop screen to external monitor. I would also check the inverter and with a spare screen that has good bulb and or damaged screen with a good bulb. Also agree you will find hinges on Ebay.

bleh... this isn't fun

Ok yeah this was hard to describe exactly what happened I know..

The gold nuts that hold the lcd + bezel to the hinge are ripped off the plastic and will no longer hold.. (all of them) -- The LCD itself is working just fine, I am pretty sure I did not damage the new LCD or the old inverter. You can press the "Home" button on the laptop and "DELL mediadirect" shows perfectly on the LCD... however, I have only seen vista show on the new LCD once, when I had every thing 90% together after the LCD install, never have seen vista on the new LCD since, even though it works on an external display.

I'm playing with it some more now.. I tried the previous Cracked LCD and it worked just fine, proving that the inverter and video/power cords are ok.

so do you have a good image on the LCD panel? - No.. only if I choose the "home" button instead of power button, I get a crystal clear image of "dell media direct" -- you would think the LCD is ok because of that but I dunno..

For some reason the "not electronically compatible" comment has struck me as a highly possible reason. I emailed the company I bought it from asking a few questions.

I was thinking it could be not electronically compatible, it is an LG brand LCD - not DELL.. Although I know I did see vista on the new LCD. it was only for a short minute or two.. Who knows?

My other thought is that maybe the LCD requires pressure or for some reason to function - I think this because the only time I saw vista was when I had the thing 90% back together, and haven't had it back together since.

Maybe it could be a wire that touches something causing it to come on only if everything is put back together right?

I'm still wondering if it's an incompatible LCD panel. I don't think you'll find a DELL panel because DELL doesn't manufacture LCD screens. Go to this site and surf around...I used this site to identify the manufacturing and coding on the back of a broken LCD to identify what I needed. I am not necessarily recommending this seller but they do provide detailed info for research:

For example, I did a quick search on your model and they listed these possible manufacturers and what the back looks like on the LCD's...you want to try to match it up...roll down and see the labels:

Thats funny-the site i bought it from (an individual/small company) had instructions on doing the lcd install printed out taken from that very site (bliss computers) ---> the original cracked working lcd is a Samsung model.. the new one i bought is an LG -- thanks for your help-

I think I am on the right track now, I will try to get RMA and try a different panel. I also found a good deal on a new bezel/Hinge on ebay.

what was the model number on the original screen compared to the model number on the new screen? itll prob be LG****** something like that or LP mabye

I would lean more to the wires. There could be a small break in the wires or something that is real hard to see. If the LCD was incompatible then most likely it would have never shown Vista.

If what I read somewhere else is true (sometime back), most LCDs are made from the same manufacture. I have replaced several LCDs. I have swapped from HP to Dell and so on. As long as the Flat ribbon was the right size to fit in the plug in the back of the monitor then I have never had much of a problem using a different one. There have been times that I had to rig the inverter board. I am not saying that there are some that are incompatible with others but I have not ran into this.
