I have a Dell inspiron 1525 the screen is not bright, but usable 2/3 as bright as it should be
I am thinking it’s the cfl bulb that’s weak, Is this more likely than the inverter
laptop is 5 years old

I did try it with a live CD also clean install of Win7 same problem
I didn’t try it on an external monitor as I am sure it would be OK
I think It’s either screen or inverter, but hoping its the inverter as I can get one from Ebay $3

Unless you have a compatible screen (cracked is ok), or known good inverter to-hand to test, no other option. If its the screen, it would be cheaper to do an LED conversion on it than replace an LCD panel new.

Im assuming you dont have an LCD testing unit?

Backlight or invertor

Always nice to have a broken screen lying around with a working backlight unless of course you have an LED screen.
The method i would use to test this would be to unplug the (possibly faulty screen) and plug in the broken screen with working backlight.
If the screen lights up even smashed to bits you know your invertor is ok
and the backlight on the currently in-use screen has a broken backlight therefore a new backlight(tough job) or new screen

The other thing to note about Dell laptops is their brightness adjustments are very finicky. Instead of getting brighter when pressing the + it will alternate between bright and low light settings and vise versa. Try pressing the + and - till you find the brightest one.

This is not the case for all dell laptops, but I have seen this happen on quite a few.

I have seen this happen as well many times when doing screen or inverter replacements. Problem is the brightest level you can find is not full brightness and too dim to send out the door.

One time it happened with a compatible screen and I sent it back and ordered another replacement from another vendor and the problem went away. In another instance it was an inverter and I went through 4 different inverters before the problem went away.

Have one in my shop now where I replaced the screen with a used screen and exact match even down to the revision number and it still does this with the original inverters. But the cracked original brightness adjusts correctly. Wish I new what the solution to this problem is.

I did a lot of research on the matter a long time ago, but I never found a working solution. I did the same as you though, kept changing out screens and inverters. Sometimes it will fix the problem, other times it would not.

I was able to update Bios as new battery came
and screen is much brighter on a scale of 8 out of 10, now usable
When inverter comes from China I will try that also
I wish I had never bought battery from China as it only last about 40 mins with full charge

Thanks
