Dism.exe wont run?

Trying to run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth on Windows 11 24H2, but they don't/wont run.
I've left each command for an hour but nothing is happening.

SFC/scannow reports no files corrupt.

Any help appreciated.

If you're having issues with SFC or DISM, my standard advice is to do a repair install on Windows itself. I do this by using the ISO file that's freshly constructed via the Media Creation Tool.

Thank you I already cut to the chase and did as you suggested...all better now.

I'll leave the post because I would like to hear others thoughts about why it would fail.

Not according to Microsoft, which explicitly states DISM should be run before SFC. See: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

If DISM won't run, then a Windows repair install is indicated. And if that doesn't fix things, then a nuke and pave. Nothing in the class that DISM and SFC both reside in should ever fail to run. If they do, Windows is corrupt.

Well that makes no sense to me, I have always ran SFC before DISM.

I have always ran SFC before DISM.

As did I, until Microsoft advised otherwise. When it comes to this sort of thing, the entity that created and maintains the OS is the final word.

The way I understand it, the SFC replaces corrupted files from a cached copy from C:\WinSxS.
The DISM RestoreHealth checks the cached copy in C:\WinSxS to make sure its updated and uncorrupted.
Logic dictates to run DISM first.

Just went thru this with a new Dell laptop on 11-24H2. Microsoft tech notes indicated running DISM and SFC. But they didn't actually work to solve the problem. A repair install initiated from the Settings > System > Recovery page downloaded the latest ISO and performed flawlessly.

I don't think I've ever seen DISM / SFC fix a problem I've encountered.

I've actually had one, the other, or both fix different issues I was having. DISM in particular.

But if my gut tells me I've got a real mess on my hands, I just go straight for a repair install using the ISO file (or a thumb drive if I happen to have loaded one very recently). I can't remember whether I've had a repair install not work only once, or never. It's been almost like a miracle in terms of no longer needing to do nuke and paves where years of tweaking of all sorts vanishes. I hate doing that to myself and I hate doing it to clients unless it's become the only option.
