DNS problem

I'm working on someone's computer trying to get the internet to work. The only way I have been able to get it to pull up any webpages is to type in the actual IP address of the website. I know it is a DNS resolving issue on the computer itself. I flushed the dns cache but there was no change. I'm scratching my head on this one. Anyone have any ideas? :)

Everything is dynamic. An IP address is assigned to the computer and I even renewed and refreshed the IP settings. I'm not familiar with ISPFIX. I'll have to check that out. This is actually the second problem on the machine. The first, which could be related is that it was running extremely slow and the computer was displaying an err msg: "corrupted or missing windows/config/system.log file." I ran a chkdsk /f /r and fixed that issue. I guess it is possible one thing caused both problems.

Have you checked IP configuration to see what DNS servers are being used? I have had this issue a few times lately, especially with people using Comcast. Here's what I did: Change the DNS address to use OpenDNS, use these addresses 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 Then re-boot the modem/router. Hope this helps you out.

Both LSPFIX and the winsock reset didn't make any difference. I still cannot get online with that computer. Every other computer on my home network works just fine. It is something to do with some corruption in the DNS resolution on the computer itself. Anybody else have any ideas? =)

I am not sure if you tried the following but here is my 2 cents

1> Reset IE make sure proxy is not used.

2> Make sure that the firewall is not doing something weird maybe turn it off for a sec and go to microsoft.com.

3> Restart in safe mode with network support then see if you can surf the internet

4> Create a new local account on the PC and see if you can surf the internet

5> Install Firefox and try surfing with it (I once had where IE was corrupted and firefox worked, I had to remove and reinstall IE or maybe I did a windows repair install cant remember now)

Good one IPTech. I forgot about that one. I usually start with my questions
When was the last time IE worked and was anything install (as far as the user knows) then I look at anything install starting from the day where all was fine.

Definitely check the hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc - it should pretty much look exactly like this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Also if i may add...

Don't use DHCP, give your computer/s IP adresses...( ie 192.168.1.1 ) (192.168.1.2) etc

Also, are you behind a router?
If so, in the DNS colum, type the address of your router as sometimes router's assign their own dns

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions. I tried them and do you know what fixed it? I installed SP3 and everything is working great.
