I have a clients laptop here with Norton 360 recently installed (not by me).

It has blocked access to everything including itself WTF!

Now in the process of removing the POS.

I would not buy this for my worst enemy.
 
Yeah brings me a lot of clients. Had one that I removed last week and a couple weeks past the customer had it expired for over a year and didn't know about it. 360 is constantly blocking things.
 
Hey, it's great because they come to me to fix it lol. That said, at my day job we use Symantec Endpoint protection and that's not half bad unless it gets stuck in the system real good, then you have to use their removal tool to get it out and reinstall.

At my FTJ we use SEP as well and it seems it blocks more good than bad.
 
Yep, its amazing how many "repairs" we do that are simply uninstalling Norton 360. If people insist on getting Norton, I usually advise that they just get Norton Antivirus, with none of the problem-causing bells and whistles that come with 360 or Internet Security. Norton AV alone isn't too bad.

Mcafee is the same way, except I don't ever advise any of their crap even if the customer insists (which they never do).
 
At least once a week I have one come in that has blocked all Web traffic. You can reset the smart (Yeah right) firewall but it'll happen again down the road.
 
A laptop with just tons of malware came in this morning, I told the guy we can clean it up but that we recommend removing McAfee.
He says he's only just bought it (£65) so wants to keep it.
Me: But it hasn't protected you
Him: I've only just bought it
Me: But it hasn't protected you

Sigh!
 
I have started to explain the antivirus "insert name" did not protect you because all that crap on the computer is NOT a virus. That is why I am a MBAM reseller. Yes I know most of you think im a "MBAM fanboy" but I have has great success with it.
 
McCrapee is the big one I hate more....yesterday an employee of one of my clients e-mailed saying she had a fairly new laptop, and it was running horribly...if I could look at it. She brings in a gorgeous new Dell laptop, i7, 16 gigs of RAM...thing should run like greased lightening. Had McAfee on it. Soon as we yanked that, she did run like she should...very fast.
 
I remember 5 years ago, I started my full time help desk job where I currently work. Had a user bring a laptop in could not get online etc my first day on the job. Ended up having to use an uninstall tool to remove mcafee by the roots because it would not uninstall, did a system restore to a month or so prior and quick system cleanup, installed new antivirus. Computer was happy as a lark and don't think it's had anymore issues that they have reported to me.

Oh man lol. That was fun.
 
I had a user from my FTJ ask me and another tech if we do work on the side and we both replied yes, but we charge very different rates. He charges $50 for a one-time cleanup and no guarantee, I charge $150, which includes cleanup/AV/guarantee that if the machine gets infected again with a current subscription of my managed AV package I will take care of it for free. She said I think I'll go with the $50 option since "I have McAfee, I don't need AV". My statement was, "clearly it's not working for you". Some people just don't get it.... I have no problem with her going the cheaper route in general, it just means she doesn't see the value in a good package and she is not a customer I want in that case.

These are the kind to where I really have to mentally struggle to "not say something to them" that will get me tossed out of their home. I've gotten pretty bold as of late and I usually just repair the machine to as perfect condition as I can will full backups of their data. I don't ask them how "they" would like me to repair it. I charge them for work I can answer too and be responsible for. It's absolute insanity when someone brings a damaged item to a professional for repair (and item they damaged), and then insist on how you should repair it. I do my best to find a way to not get into those conversations. I discuss very little before the repair, I just say, I will have to look at it before I can give you a responsible/accurate answer. I hand it back in perfect condition, if they are wondering why McAfee is not there, I tell them that it was part of the overall problem, it's gone, your laptop works perfectly and I'm sorry you wasted your money on the garbage software--that part is not my fault. I can then tell them I can email them many articles that will back me up on that. I'm NOT responsible for the CRAP software that is out there, take it up with McAffee, Norton, or whoever. You paid me to put my 20+ years of experience behind this repair, and you received better service than what I'm charging you for, I'm sorry if you don't like it. This is usually where the conversation ends.
