Is the Synology DS1512+ any good?

Pretty vague question without any additional info. Depends what you need it to do.

Standard file shares for 10 user office? Yeah, probably going to run great.

Serve up iSCSI storage for SQL server cluster? Probably not so great.

The 1515+ came out in 2015, right? Not that old, probably still has some life left in it. Counter argument: That was one of the ones covered by their one-year warranty extension because of faulty RTC chips.

In that context, if the price is right, it would be fine. Personally I don't buy anything new for my use.

My first Synology NAS was the DS1512+. My business plan has me replacing my hardware every 3 years - so I also have the DS1515+ and DS1618+.

The DS1515+ suffered the blinking blue light of death last year and was replaced under warranty.

The DS1512+ with its original WD 2tb Red drives is still going strong in its 7th year of use now as a secondary NAS.

I saw the Synology promotions for it dated 2012. Is that getting too old?

There's an update that is more recent and recommended: DSM_DS1512+_24922

For the most part the end of the model numbers represent the year they were released.

12 = 2012, 18 = 2018, etc.
