I've seen this on a few occasions recently. I sit down at a customer's computer, switch it on, the desktop comes up and Windows pops up this frightening message:

The customer immediately goes into meltdown that my fabulous new recommended anti virus program is broken!! I know what's going on: Emsisoft is doing it's regular updates, it shuts itself down and loads up the newest version. It's off for a few seconds at most, but that's enough to trigger the Windows alert and send the customer into paroxysms of terror. Now I have to explain what's going on, bring up Emsisoft and show that it's merely doing it's regular updates and there's nothing to panic about.

I don't really want to switch off the alerts because one day it may be genuine but I do want to avoid these false alarms. Telling the customer to ignore these alerts is just teaching bad habits.

What to do???

Hmmm.... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that message was being generated by Defender, not Emsisoft?
Not a good idea to tell the client to ignore the message either.
Any advice @UmbraEmsisoft @Emsisoft ?
yes, Defender/Windows/Security Centre
Yes, because it is very sensitive. To be updated properly, EAM's processes must be shut down briefly to be replaced by the updated ones; which trigger the alert from WDSC.

That is the same behavior when you want replace an opened file on Windows by an updated version, you can't until the old one is closed.

Just tell the customer to relax. As long as they see that lovely green shield in the bottom right beside the date and time, they are okay.

You mean the one that looks very similar to the Defender icon?
It's difficult to distinguish the icons when talking to a customer over the phone. Both white shields with green in the middle.

Also as Larry said there's no need to temporarily terminate antivirus protection to update it (schedule it on restart, notify the user that a restart is required to update protection, remind the user with further notifications if not rebooted). I haven't seen this from Norton updates ever.

Microsoft surely has guidelines for antivirus developers as Norton doesn't do it.

Maybe @UmbraEmsisoft can provide this feedback to Emsisoft?

Why does the computer need to restart?
Could the program not just close itself and reopen when its finished?
I've seen Emsisoft do this exact thing many times after signature updates.

It does when the program get some minor updates; a computer reboot may be required in case of major changes.
