So, I got a call from a business client on Monday. Their main business email acct (Yahoo -- I know, I know, I've been telling them for years but they just won't change) was hacked the previous Friday.
The hackers got into the account and created a new account with a number one added to the username, (example: business@yahoo.com -- business1@yahoo.com) which the lady who works there could plainly see. This prompted her to immediately change the password. She called me and I connected remotely to check things out. I'm not very familiar with Yahoo email because I usually tell people to avoid it like the plague. Anyway, I looked around and didn't see anything else unusual.
The next day, I got a call and the lady told me she could send email, but she wasn't receiving any. I was already on the road so I stopped by. This is what I found:
The hackers had set up a filter (Gear icon, Settings, Filters) that sent all incoming email to the Trash. I deleted that filter and everything started working again. Of course, I had to move all recent mail from the trash into the inbox.
So, if you get a call about a hacked email account, check the filter settings. This happened to a Yahoo acct. but, I suppose it could happen to other services as well.
Hope this helps.
Andy
