Help with Win 7 to XP pro

Ok, I'm about ready to throw all of these machines out the Window! Windows networking is kicking my butt, I'm afraid to say. Should be so simple, I'm embarrassed to ask for help - so be gentle :-)

2 machines:
Windows 7 ultimate
XP Pro with shared printer connected via USB

XP can see and browse all of Win 7 shares.
Win 7 can print from the printer connected to XP PRO.
Both machines can ping each other.
Win 7 sees shared folders on XP Pro, but gets the access denied message when trying to connect.

I have tried the IRPstack adjustment. Workgroup name the same on both machines. Tried mapping network drive. No firewalls or AV of any kind. Network and sharing settings in win 7 appear to be fine. Simple file sharing turned off on XP PRO. Reviewed registry setting for SAM etc., all seem to be fine.

What the heck am I missing for this simplest of all network sharing situation?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you gone to network and sharing center to tell it that there is no password required for access to shared folders?

Problem solved

Well, due to some encryption problems with true crypt I ended up having to reinstall XP Pro. Same nLite'd disc, everything exactly the same. And wouldn't you know it. After installing, I set up sharing (as I've done hundreds of time) and it took all of 30 seconds to have all the shares, printers etc. working.

So problem solved.

Bugs me though - I lost a learning opportunity....

Thanks for your replies

Windows networking between different versions is idiotic.

We should be able to expect it to just work, what with it all coming from the same manufacturer, but it doesn't and often needs way too much tinkering to get everything working smoothly.

Me too, it took me so long to share files between my xp laptop and vista desktop when i first got it that I nearly gave up! I downloaded a guide and put it in step by step format that i use when needed now so i dont miss anything and have to spend hrs backtracking.
