If you are a one man or woman operation how do you refer to yourself/business on places like your website? Do you say "us", "we" etc or "I", "myself" etc.

Also, why is your company name Fascist Computers? Are we being trolled?

And I generally interchange between "I" and "We" even though theres only me. I think its a combination of habit from my day job, and hopeful thinking that I'll someday soon not be the only employee.

Holy cow peeps, I 'bout spit my Dr. Pepper out after reading this. Lol!

Still a 404 for me too!

:D

I often say "we", and have been called out on it on occasion. I have concluded it is the correct term, however.

"We" can refer not only to "You and your business, as an entity", but also more importantly it refers to "You and your client". Without the client, it is "I". With the client, it is "We". They make the decisions as to repair or not, accept quotes or not, etc... "I", do not do that.

Bottom line is that when we sell our services and products we are entering into a contract and contracts can't be one-sided.

Plus, it sounds more professional over the phone, IMO. When I'm called out about it (which is rare) I do explain it as "Yes, you have to make the decision to fix this and you are paying the money", in essence.

I think this really depends on your audience - If you want to attract bigger clients portray yourself as a bigger company but if you want smaller companies you maybe better off as just you.

Being a big established company may not always be the best- some companies want a small responsive local technician.
The other issue about portraying your company as bigger is the clients may demand more out of you than they would if you were small.

End of the day as long as your Honest, provide awesome service and get raving reviews from clients i dont think it really matters to most people.

For my company i think my website makes me look bigger than i am but if a potential customer were to ask me how many employees i have ill tell them the truth. Whilst its just me i do have contractors i can hire when needed to assist with bigger projects or if im not available.

Appreciate all the information in this thread so far.

Can you give an example of you being called out on it? Like what did the customer say, their reaction, etc?

Sure, it's never been in a bad context and has always been "in person" and not on the phone. Usually it goes down like this: Customer arrives and I say "we" - they can plainly see it is just "me" and kind of give a chuckle, "You keep saying we, but it's just you right?" I reply with, "Yes, it's just me! Blame it on my years in retail, but really, it's you and I that are going to make this repair happen!"

The response will change to be more serious or playful depending on the customer and their disposition but the message is essentially the same.

If I had to guess, the issue has come up 5-6 times in 6-7 years.. so it's not a biggie. I have never lost a client or had any negative impact from using "we" that I can tell.
