I have a HP DV&-6135dx laptop and they upgraded to windows 10 and now they only get sound through the main speakers if they have there headphones plugged in. I have upgraded the bios and uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them.

I then put in a new hard drive and did a clean install of windows 7 and used snappy driver to install the most current drivers. Nothing showing missing or not working in device manager. It has a beats audio control panel and I have restored that back to default settings as suggested and also ran the windows troubleshooter and it can't detect audio problems.

I also booted into linux mint from a usb drive and it does the same thing in linux as it does in windows. Could it be that the audio jack or speakers are bad or malfunctioning? not sure what could be causing this.

Did you also reset BIOS to defaults. If it's doing this in Linux as well then it's most certainly a hardware problem. Both the sound chipset and speaker circuitry is usually part of the motherboard.

I reset the bios to default settings before I upgraded it to the most current version and after upgrading it and still the same issues. I'm thinking it is a hardware issue too but wanted a second opinion from someone before I talked to them.

If it was working fine before the failed upgrade it seems unlikely it's a hardware issue but it could be a coincidence i suppose.... Have you double checked the bios for weird sound settings? Try different headphones. Is it a combo socket? Check for obstruction in the socket.

I checked the bios for any weird settings but didn't see any. On the left side it has two headphone jacks and then a microphone jack. You can't hear any sound coming from the headphones at all when they are plugged in, but the main speakers do work. If I unplug the headphones then I get no sound at all. I did check for obstructions as best as I could but I didn't see any.

I did read that the sensor could be jammed and one person fixed it with cleaning out the jacks with a toothpick, but that didn't work for me either. Other people found that plugging it in a tv with hdmi and then unplugging it worked as well but not for me.

On that laptop, do you have windows 10 drivers for the audio? Have you checked the control panel, then sounds where you can click to change the default sound from headphones to your computer?

From what I have seen it's a small leaf switch. Initially I thought they had a feed back loop for detection but when I plugged in a jack cut off of a ear bud it turned off the speakers. So I took the port apart and I found a small leaf switch. Efforts to mess with that usually did not work.

I took it apart and saw the small leaf switch but that didn't help any either. I talked to the customer and they said they will just leave the headphones plugged in and live with it that way until they get a new laptop. Thanks for your help everyone.
