HP Scanning

Does anyone know what the issue could be here? Back in July a realtor client of mine was scanning contracts through her HP printer. 13 pages long all from the document feeder, 8.5x11", scanned in color and 300 dpi. The file size was between 8 and 9 mb. The past two weeks she's been doing the same thing. No settings have changed and the number of pages are identical. Now they are 24 mb in size. What's going on? She scans in color because the documents are signed. The only color on the page is the pen used to sign the contract, and they are saved as PDF.

I suspect, regardless of what the client is saying, that settings have changed. The most likely thing would be DPI being increased, but you'd have to review the settings for whatever scanning software she's using.

I would not be surprised if something is tweaked to give less resolution that the size will go right back down to what it was.

By the way, I'm not saying that the client necessarily changed anything by hand, intentionally. Sometimes a software update will do this on its own (and when that happens it's mystifying and confusing, sometimes coupled with infuriating).

^ What he said. Some settings changed somewhere and could easily have happened because of an update. And, because we can't read minds, make model and scanning software might help. Another question. Why color? I've never heard of a statutory requirement that a document signed using colored ink/lead must be scanned in color. Flip it to 1bit B&W and the files should be 1/10th the size.

^This, too.

They're essentially electronic photocopies, which is what's been kept for a very long time now.

If they scan frequently do them a favor and talk them in to one of these

I've talked a handful of clients over the years into getting these. They all bitched about the high price. They all professed their absolute love for the device after they'd used it a while.
This. Clients are amazed at the speed. What took hours was finished in minutes. Must have for lawyers or doctors who deal with tons of paper.
