[TIP] I didn't even know AMD had Professional drivers!

My daily driver is a Minisforum UM790Pro which came with the Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU and integrated Radeon 780M graphics and 64GB of DDR5-5600 RAM. (16GB of that DRAM is assigned to the GPU!)

It's always been a bit unstable, especially when viewing videos in MS Edge with spontaneous reboots and blue screens way too frequent!

But recently I decided to dabble in local AI. I installed Msty which is a GUI overlay for Ollama. And Ollama wouldn't use my fancy GPU because AMD doesn't provide ROCm libraries for the 780M.

But I found an independent Developer did compose the necessary libraries and put them on GitHub. And one of the requirements is to install the Professional version of the AMD GPU drivers.

Since installing those Pro drivers I have not had a single blue screen or spontaneous reboot on my PC! And the performance is actually better!

Just throwing this out there for anyone dealing with possible AMD GPU issues. AMD drivers have a reputation for being substandard, but perhaps they put more effort into the Professional versions?

PS. Ollama now thinks that I have 32GB of VRAM which allows for much wider choice of model usage with decent performance! (Although I'm not sure why it's detecting twice the value I dedicated in the BIOS?)
