This morning I went to troubleshoot for an employee in our parts department who was have internet connectivity issues. He is on a desktop and connected to the network via CAT5. His internet connection was going off and on constantly. It was connected fine for 15 seconds, than had no connection for 10 seconds, and repeat indefinitely.
I replaced the cable to be sure that wasn't the issue. It didn't fix it.
So I figured that it might be the network card, but wanted to play around for a bit first and check out any other possible reasons. I unplugged the Ethernet cable from his computer and plugged it into a 6 port switch that I had on hand so I could connect both my laptop and his computer to the network through the switch while I worked. I both computers into the switch and both worked perfectly. Suddenly the troublesome computer worked perfectly. I played around on it to be sure the connection lasted, and did a network speed test, and the problem had vanished.
I unplugged the switch and plugged the cable straight into the computer again, like it originally was, and once again the internet kept going out every few seconds. Ran it through the switch again and again the problem was gone.
I left the switch there so the employee could get back to work, but I am still trying to find out what the problem was and why adding an unnecessary switch between the computer and the original switch fixed the problem.
This is probably something simple that I am missing because of my lack of experience.
