Client system in shop for diagnosis. After running GSmart on the Seagate 2TB drive I get these results:

Sorry for the ugly formatting. Some of these numbers look so far off as to be implausible. Figured I better check here and see what you all think. The system itself is less than a year old, which is another reason it doesn't look right.

More info:

Multiple errors, this one regarding MS Photos is consistent. App crashes when I attempt to start it.

Running the PS script in FixWin to re-register store apps produces multiple failures:

It seems like there are multiple corrupted system files surrounding Windows Store. I've not seen this before so I'm unsure how to approach it.

I imaged the drive, backed everything up with Fabs, and reset Windows thinking that would repair the files. The result was that the errors changed from Photos to the Phone app, but nothing else improved. Looking at the output from GSmart, I'm unclear what to make of the seemingly large read/write errors but no reallocated sectors. <scratches bald head>

If it were a software issue, wouldn't resetting Windows repaired that?
Could the drive heads be failing?
A MB issue of some sort?

The device is an HP Envy 700-410
8GB RAM
2TB Seagate drive
Still under warranty until June.

I'd almost say replace it if you're unsure. I'll let others chime in, but thought a few have stated they won't use Seagates anymore due to failure rates recently.

The drive could be failing, and I'd suspect it. Restore the image you made to a new drive and continue work from there.

Try doing a repair install of the OS

Let me guess, ST2000DM001. These drives are horrible for failures and you are very fortunate that you are getting an early warning.

I'm not a fan of Seagate drives, but it's what it came with. Given my recent encounters with hard drives I clearly need to bone-up on troubleshooting/working with them. Here, I'm getting thrown off by the weird software errors and wonky reset. That might be because I expect to see bad sectors and such and am unaccustomed to seeing bad head issues.

@lcoughey Yep, that's the one! It's settled then. I'll contact HP for a replacement. Should be fun.

In my servers, I'd tend towards WD Black or HGST, but next year, they could be the bad drives. For every data uses, such as clones, I tend to buy Seagate drives, as they are usually the better bang for the buck....and generally end up getting used for parts before they get a chance to fail on their own.

I tell my clients that I'd prefer that they spend less time and money worrying about the one hard drive they use and invest more time and money into a solid backup solution.

So, shiny new WD Black HDD arrived today and everything reloaded. Still getting 0x80070003 for photos, store, etc. because windows store is gone. Stopped the update service, emptied the Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore, and \SoftwareDistribution\Download folders, restarted the update service. No change.

I found and followed the directions here:

...but to no avail.

It turns out that along with a failing HDD, Windows Store had been so fatally corrupted as to be only partially missing (and perhaps explaining why the files wouldn't merge). Various bits of the programs could be found, but nothing I tried would restore or rewrite them. The fix ended up being to repair Windows from within Windows via the appropriate installation media. Apparently quite a few are having trouble with Windows Store disappearing for one reason or another. Sure, some are deleting it and finding out later they shouldn't have done that, while others are pointing the finger at Microsoft updates being the culprit. Either way, I felt it best to pursue the unproductive fixes first so I'd know what not to do next time.
