Laptop Freezing on HP splash screen, every time

I got this laptop in today, when I first started it, it froze while the XP screen was loading. I shut it down and started it up again and from now on it doesn't go past the HP logo screen (where it also displays the key for entering the bios). I slaved the drive to the test PC and to my dismay, Hard disk Sentinel reported the drive health as 100%.

The system stops responding right when the screen shows up, won't take any keys or recognize a boot disk.

EDIT: I gave it some time and tried again, it got into XP but pretty much froze immediately when the desktop showed up.

Have you swapped out the ram? Hardware diagnostics, while they take time can save so much frustration. Had a bad HD that didn't show up until I ran the full scan from WD yesterday. If I just went with the preliminary tests, I would still be scratching my head. Good luck!

Hard Disk Sentinel just checks the SMART data, it doesn't actually run diagnostics.

Thank you. Run a full diagnostics on the HDD, memory and motherboard (MOBO, CPU and GPU if possible) and get back to us with the results.

Not much to do here. I would take EVERYTHING out of the computer (even the modem if it has one), clear the BIOS, put known good ram in. If still a problem, flash the bios. (Note, HP lets you flash the bios by pressing power, windows and some key to flash it before the system posts. Give it a shot...)

Try some good known working memory first and see where that gets you. If that does not work, then do as Rob said and attempt to flash the bios and go from there. You can even try and pull one stick of memory at a time and see if one of the ones installed is bad. If you think you found the good one, then put that good one in the open slot and try it there, if it works, then test the memory. If it does not work, then the slot is probably bad.
