MacBook Pro SSD Recovery

Got a MacBook Pro in the shop right now for liquid damage. Logic board is ruined so simply going to recover their data as the SSD appears untouched by any liquid.

It's a MacBook Pro Retina late 2012 (A1425 EMC 2557) and has what I believe is a 128GB mini-pcie SSD - pictures attached.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend an adaptor or enclosure so I can connect to one of my workstations and recover the data.

I found this but it's quite pricey (£70 in the UK) and I'm not 100% it would even work. - https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MAU3ENVOYPRO/

Not sure if a cheap adaptor like this would do the job?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If I'm sewing your picture correctly, the adapter you are looking at is for newer SSDs and not the SSD you are looking at.

This is what I was worried about. We rarely deal with Apple devices and when it comes to hard drives I'm only familiar with SATA or SAS. All these mini-pci, mSATA, M.2 -- then you have different variants of each and they all look very similar!

An area I need to do some learning as I can see them becoming increasingly common. Anyway, if the link isn't compatible... what is? :)

Well I ordered this adaptor from Amazon. Arrived today - doesn't fit :(

After more research I'm almost certain this drive is a proprietary form factor - THANKS APPLE!

Plenty of reviews saying the OWC enclosure works but I will have to OK it with the client before ordering since it's £70 and not something we are likely to use again. Will update later in the week.

They are not proprietary, just not common. How were you searching for these, meaning words. I've searched using "ssd to usb adapter" and came up with a number of hits. The link you posted is for a device that clearly uses a different SSD, they even point out which SSD people have bought with it, which is clearly different than the one you have. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-850-...g_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=049Q08V3PAVAYF5XD6PG

This site might help point you in the right direction.

I've used a couple of those adapter, theyre PITA peice of junk, most just don't even work, some plainly bursted on fire.
Some worked too :)

OWC is the way to go... Always has worked for me and you can offer the customer to keep it when the data recovery is complete for a nice fast backup drive... It's a slick little enclosure that will not fall apart.

Just an update:

Ordered the OWC enclosure from my original post - Drive fits straight in and is recognised :)

But of course nothing is ever that simple... They had filevault enabled so it's encrypted >.>

The password is known so it shouldn't be too difficult to remove (hopefully!)
