Me and ChatGPT...

My hatred and distrust of all things "AI" has softened somewhat recently.

I had a problem with a Rainmeter "meter" that wasn’t working correctly.

All attempts to contact the author failed, and asking on various forums was useless. So, in a state of frustration and despair, I bit the bullet and asked ChatGPT about it.

It literally took 2 seconds to respond. Not only did it tell me what the problem was, but it also showed me how to fix the issue and suggested improvements to make it better. I was very happy.

So I thought maybe I should ask about another minor annoyance I experience in my favorite game, Left 4 Dead 2.

In the game, we have a "chat window" that one can open to text a brief message to other players. It is possible to use a microphone to speak to others, but I disdain doing that.

The problem arises when I open the chat window. It freezes the player while it’s open (which is normal), and the AI Director, which controls the game, detects that the player is frozen while texting. In response, it often sends an attacker to bring down the player. The attack occurs if you take too long to type. I'm a slow typist, so I get attacked a lot!

I asked ChatGPT if there was an easier way.

The "easier way" should not use any program that sends my voice or text to any cloud service (it should be locally processed only).

The program detecting the text input (for pasting into the L4D2 chat window) should be portable and not send data to its developer or a cloud service.

The text input should happen instantly or within 1–2 seconds of the chat window being opened.

Within 2 seconds, I received a response from ChatGPT, which was brilliant, to say the least!

By using Microsoft Voice Access and a small portable program called "AutoHotKey," ChatGPT created a script that would:

  1. Detect text captured by MS Voice Access.
  2. Open the chat window in the game.
  3. Paste the text into the chat window instantly.
  4. Allow me to review the text before I manually press "Enter" to display the text in the game.
ChatGPT gave me step-by-step directions on how to set up MS Voice Access (offline) and AutoHotKey.

Why stop there?

In the game, there’s an option to select a picture or GIF to apply to a wall, floor, etc.

I then asked ChatGPT if there was an easier way to "spray" a wall with such a picture or GIF.

Of course, there was!

Now, while in the game, when I press the key to "spray" the image or GIF onto a wall or floor, it automatically selects a random pic or GIF from the VGUI folder that stores all the images and GIFs. I should add that I can manually place images/GIFs into this folder after converting them from .jpg, .png, .bmp, .gif, etc., into the .vtf file format that L4D2 understands.

Going further, I asked about blocking an annoyance on the "Google Home Page." I don’t use Google, but sometimes it's the only search engine that gives a satisfactory answer.

When I open the Google Home Page, there’s a pop-up asking me "to sign up for Google." I’d rather not, and I’d rather not see their blurb either.

I use uBlock Origin with many custom filters that I’ve found and applied over the last few months, but none blocked this annoying pop-up.

So I asked ChatGPT. It instantly gave me a filter I’d never seen before to apply.

It worked!

I think I’ve found my new best friend...

You're not alone, though I don't use ChatGPT as my primary AI search.

The advances in this technology in an insanely short period of time are just incredible, and the number of hallucinations just keeps dropping like a rock.

I fully expect that AI is going to become more trustworthy than most humans are in the not at all too distant future, even for complex queries.

I'm wondering if this isn't a better alternative to Google Search or "DuckDuckGo"?

I've asked it all kinds of questions since I started using it on Saturday morning, 21.12.24.

So far, the answers I've received have been so accurate that I haven’t had to "Google" for additional information—it gave me exactly what I wanted.

I really like the fact that I can ask it a question in plain speech.

For example: "Ric something was the lead singer of The Cars?"

It responded with his full name (Ric Ocasek), date of birth, date of death, and some additional information about his vocal talents, etc.

I suppose I could have gotten the information from a Google search or Wikipedia, but this was so much faster and more informative.

And, being Christmas, I remembered a comedy song from years ago that had the line "Oh, what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute!" to the tune of "Jingle Bells."

It instantly told me the singer's name—Colin Buchanan—and provided a Youtube link, a short description of the song, the album it appeared on, etc.

I asked it to explain the "Plank Function" in a simple way for me to understand-It did!

I asked it to explain "Collatz Conjecture" and it did.

Nice.

@frase this looks interesting! Thanks for the heads up. I'll find a copy to buy.

Interesting that Neils Bohr, Max Plank (father of "Quantum Theory") and Albert Einstein never collaborated although they did influence each others thinking.

So far almost everything computer related I've asked its help with has been met with wrong answers or unhelpful answers. It's pretty good at coding basic HTML and CSS though. I needed to add a table to my website recently and instead of coding it all up manually like I normally do I asked ChatGPT to do it. It styled it very nicely too based on the design I described to it.

I have nothing but praise for it. I've only been using it for 2+ days but so far it's been incredibly helpful.
80% of what I've asked it has been "computer related."

It hasn't given any "wrong answers" per se, but when one option didn't work it suggested another that did.
I don't think having to offer alternative options is it's fault, as my system may differ in many ways to "default setups."

Some years ago I installed a small utility in one of my Linux Mint PC's called "Archey."

Archey displayed system information in various colours in the Terminal.
The Archey utility died a natural death years ago but when it died it left an error every time I opened the terminal.
I tried many times to remove the error but could never find an answer by 'googling."

I just (20 mins ago?) asked ChatGPT about it and 5 minutes later my terminal is back to normal. Also there were 2 authentication keys from Opera Browser that I haven't used for many years. I had no idea how to remove those keys either and "googling" was useless.
5 minutes after removing the Archey error the Opera keys were gone too.

I love this thing!

Edit to add: I was using this command to keep my Linux systems up-to-date:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get clean

I asked was there a better alternative and yes, there was!
So now I do:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y && sudo apt dist-upgrade -y && sudo apt autoremove -y && sudo apt autoclean && sudo apt clean && sudo apt full-upgrade -y

It explained why this was better, safer and more thorough as well.

They shared ideas and complemented each other on their works. Though as Wolfgang Pauli perfectly stated -

I use ChatGPT frequently for marketing and other business-related purposes. I was initially hesitant, but after watching multiple SCORE webinars suggesting using AI, I figured I would try it. I am impressed. It certainly is not a copy-and-paste solution, but it does do a lot of the work.
