Microsoft announced three upcoming changes to update procedures of previous versions of the company's Windows operating system today.

The company created what it calls rollup packages for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 which are designed to bring the operating system to the newest patched version without having to install all updates released for it one by one.

This could be a lot easier and faster than updating via something like WSUS offline. It also looks like there is a way to inject these rollups into .wim files, thereby keeping images more up-to-date. Doing a test install now.

Also noted: For those who aren’t familiar with the Microsoft Update Catalog website, note that it still requires using Internet Explorer at this point because of an ActiveX control used. Later this summer, we will be updating the site to eliminate the ActiveX control in order to support other browsers.

That'll be nice if they follow through with it.

So I downloaded the 64-bit version and fired up a new VM with win 7 SP1 and I get a message that "The update is not applicable to your computer" What am I missing?

It's not a bad thing, but I already have up-to-date WIMs for 7 & 8 Home & Pro - I don't see this as a reason to do anything differently than I'm already doing. I guess it will help folks that are still installing from DVDs & loading the elevendy hundred & six updates manually.

To apply this update, you must install the April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 (KB3020369). You can read more about the Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 here.

Ran wsus after and got more updates like IE 11. I think it was 60+.
That's what I am finding as well. This is going to end up with a procedure close to what I was doing before.

Tentative:
1. Install Win 7 with SP1
2. Install April 2015 Service Stack
3. Install Rollup KB3125574
4. Install WSUS update 3138612
5. Install IE11
6 Setup Microsoft Update
7. Run Microsoft Update

Comments are welcome.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but couldn't you run WSUS Offline in place of steps 4-6?

So how did you get this work? Everything I've tried hangs. WSUSoffline hung on the first patch. Windows update hangs. This is not working for me.
I make Audit Mode images in Hyper V on my Win 10 laptop. I installed the servicing patch - The cumulative update- ran WSUS offline till no more updates then syspreped and imaged it with macrium and stuck it with my other images on my 128 gig flash drive.
