I've ranted about the slow speed of NAS units and one of mine is the slowest - Netgear NV+ 4-bay with a 100 Mbs NIC built in running RAID 5. I'm finally fed up with it (and RAID 5) and grabbed a new QNAP TR-004 4-bay USB 3.x DAS unit that I'm running RAID 10 with WD RE4s. I'm in the process of moving around 4 TB of data but the geek in me is tweaked.

If your curious this guy provides some details......

I think that the 100 connection was a huge problem.

I agree. Writes were in the measly ~10 MBs range and reads 17 MBs with the NV+ which is known to be slow to start with. But - even my gigabit devices only have writes in the 35-45 MBs range. Still way slower than I want. The QNAP DAS is right around 130-140 MBs in write and I may still have a SATA2 drive in there. I forgot to check. I'm also running USB 3.0 though not 3.1.

Yes, USB 3.0 will be much faster than 100 Mbit/s LAN (USB 3.0 speed up to 5Gbit/s). Read speed of WD drive near 120 MBps. So on practice read speed from RAID10 will be near 240 MBps (almost 2Gbit/s), write speed 150 MBsp (1.2 GBit/s).

I'd mentioned I'd moved to the QNAP TR-004 DAS in this post. It disappeared from Windows File Explorer the other day and cannot be "seen" by Windows. Weird thing is it still shows up in Device Manager and Disk Management. Side note - It does the same thing in Linux. Shows up in Disk Management but not in any of the file managers. Hmmm.....

I filed a support ticket but haven't heard anything yet.
