Customer approached me today asking to sync all the photos on his PC with his ipad.

Whats the best way to do this?

Would you use itunes? Or some other type of sync system?

Would you bounce to cloud between devices (I tend to like this idea, because it would provide constant backup and reduce the storage load on the ipad) but not sure if its doable with itunes or need some other setup to achieve it).

Yea- for those of you who are apple-fluent, this will sound like a no-brainer.

Im not a 'mac' person and have no experience to draw on. Thanks to any Nibblers out there who can point me in the best direction :)

I would use iTunes and Icloud. Something like this.
Someone else might have a easier suggestion. :)

To sync photos from a folder on your hard disk to your device
Drag the images you want into a folder on your computer. If you want images to appear in separate photo albums on your device, create folders inside the main folder and drag images into the new folders.
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left.
Choose "Sync photos from."
Select Choose Folder from the pop-up menu and choose your main image folder. Apply.

First is to determine exactly how many photos he has & make sure his iPad will accommodate them.

Otherwise, it's really simple; plug in the iPad, click on the device when it shows up on the left side of iTunes, click "photos" up at the top right side of the window and select a folder that you want to sync to the iPad.

Done.

Otherwise, if he's got far too many pictures to fit onto his iPad, he could use SugarSync or a similar cloud service to backup his photos to the cloud and also access them through SS's app.

He DOES have a true backup of all his photos, right?

Thanks both of you for the very informative replies

and particularly for not giving me a hard time about being such a lamer with itunes :)

He's dropping the gear in next week, and I will have all the specifics then, but yes, absolutely need to check that the pics will not clog up all of his 64gb memory (no freaking sd card slot on iPads - another reason I prefer Android!) and I take your point that I should check to make sure he has a proper backup system in place - something I would normally do, but for some reason had not thought to check with this particular customer.

Much appreciated.

Depending on the size of their iphoto library, I'd let itunes sync everything and control backups, not just iphoto. The cloud is only going to give them 5gb for free. Also depending on bandwidth, icloud may be cumbersome. This way their is a backup of at least their photos, music, and possibly email and clanders in case their computer or the ipad dies. Plus if the ipad dies and needs to be restored (seen this happen just after trying to install latest iOS updates), its painless to get them going again. People always think they can pick out whats most important to them until its gone.

Um, yeah can you guys take it elsewhere?

As far as it being a simple thing, I don't believe in this instance that googling was necessarily going to provide the best approach.

The reason being, simply, that the way end users do things and the way I prefer to do them are two approaches

Its like if you Google now to fix a simple problem and the first 5 results all suggest a reformat. Well, yeah, it will solve the problem, but its not how I would prefer to approach a fix.

In the same way, what I am asking here is the best way other *techs* approach a particular problem, and questioning (because I don't know anything about it) whether, in fact, iTunes is actually the best approach, or, not.

Anyhoo, thanks, and still welcome any further discussion that's on topic

You can also use many pro photo apps for transfer..... Nikon Transfer, Adobe Bridge or Lightroom, etc. If it connects to a camera and downloads it'll connect to an iPhone/iPad. Using the pro software allows you to edit meta data, set directories and subdirectories, etc. Give it a try!

Syncing, per se, may need to be done manually...I'm not sure. But if you copied images back to the phone/ tablet the same file with the same name would either be overwritten or you'd get an alert box asking you what you want to do.
