I have a customer who wants his new laptop's 512gb NVME upgraded to 1tb.

I got the new drive yesterday but it's not even being recognized for the install to take place. I put it in an mSATA adapter and put it in a SATA enclosure, then plugged it into my PC and still can't see it. Figured it was a bad drive so I ordered another NVME and it arrived today but having the same exact issue.

Is there some kind of prep work I need to do on the new NVME before doing the install? If I need to format the drive first, how can I do that if I can't find it on the customer's laptop or mine?

This is the first time I've EVER had an issue installing to any type of drive, including NVMEs so I'm very confused. Any tips on getting the drive to show up? I've ordered a cloning machine which will arrive tomorrow. His original [from his old laptop] SSD is a 2.5", which I tried cloning yesterday using the mSATA adapter and the cloner can't even find it. The new cloner has the SATA to NVME slots both.

Did I get 2 bad sticks from 2 different suppliers or is it me??????

M.2 sockets have various keys, and there are voltages differences between NVME and SATA.

You have to line everything up or you can cause electrical damage, typically the device simply not appearing in the system's BIOS is a result of an incompatible disk to socket pairing.

I always make sure everything is snug and I ordered the NVME to the HP specs, exactly. Is it possible to get a blank drive that you can't even format or install to right away?

Have you tried a Linux "live" OS to see if it shows up?
Gparted or Parted Magic might see it so you can format it at least
I don't have any PCs with Linux on them. I just don't understand how I can get 2 drives from 2 different suppliers, following the HP specs for this model and can't read either drive. This is a new one for me. My last resort will be to clone but I'd rather install Windows 11 fresh. I even tried to install Windows 10 on it and that was a no-go, as well.

You don't need to install it on a PC just run it "live" on any PC you have to hand.
I'm checking Linux out right now. What works well for a novice in Linux? I'm not opposed to learning something new but I'm kind of in a time crunch. I had hoped to have this all done by earlier today and ready for pickup. Didn't expect the snags.

Do you mean it is not recognised on your system? If not goto Drive Manager and see if it is displayed there, if it is try and initialise the drive and format from there.

That's exactly what I mean. I'll try as you suggested. For some reason, I'm just not getting the video's "tutor". I might be too tired to go any further tonight. May have to wait until I'm fresh in the morning.

@frase....... I was able to do a simple volume type of format and initialize the drive. I can see it on my system now. Still can't install Windows 10 or 11 on it, though. And I'm too tired to work anymore tonight. Been up working since 3 am and I have a bit of a brain fog right now. Will try again tomorrow. :(
