Hey all - this may be a super simple question.

I have a customer with a small office on a workgroup network.

The customer and his employees can all access the files for work - but the customer wants a hard drive where only he and his wife can access it over the network (for their personal files etc).

No one uses passwords to login to their systems.

Is there a NAS drive that is password protected that only he and his wife could access? Something simple that when they click on the drive under Network it asks for a password right there (e.g. no additional software needed, and no needing to create additional user accounts/passwords on their systems)?

Ok, just didn't want to buy one that wouldn't. So a standard Seagate or WD NAS should do the trick?

Have you worked up a scope? Statutory requirements - HIPAA, PCI, etc? Store size? WD has a nice box based on M$ Storage Server. But it's not cheap.

Good thinking trev - The customer has a Carbonite Business plan - I will see if it covers NAS drives.

I talked to the customer - he is going with the Synology setup + 2TB WD RED - and I got the 2 bay Synology for him - so if he wants to add more storage in the future.

Part of the advantage of going with a NAS is that it's easy to set it up for RAID. Might be worth throwing another drive in to start with and mirroring them.

Do the Synology units let you expand storage later by replacing each drive in turn (replace drive, rebuild mirror, replace drive, rebuild mirror, see larger capacity)?

Synology has an app for iDrive. You can get signed up for iDrive as a referral partner and get a commission as long as they have an active account.
