Vista 32-bit, there is no sound playback devices. The drivers are installed correctly (tried deleting the old drivers and reinstalling a fresh download) but there is explanation marks in device manager saying the sound device is not working properly.

All the sound related services are started.

The sound works fine from a Mint live CD.

Any ideas?

Did you try just going into device manager and deleting the sound device and grabbing latest drivers from manufactuers and reinstalling?

Yep I to that, restart it installs the drivers but then says failed. It gives no explanation to why it failed to install. If I run the driver setup.exe file it just installs as normal but it doesn't work.

Have you tried Driverpacks, both Vista and XP versions?

I've found that in this situation I delete the item in Device Mgr, then use DPs and afterwards let Windows update see if theres a better driver.

Works 99% of the time. Basically I let DP determine device THEN look for correct driver

If you've exclamations then I dont think its detected it right, Vista bit funny that way.

Is it 32bit or 64?

You have I assume tried HP site :

32-bit and already downloaded the drivers from HP. It does install if I delete them from device manager and restart, but it then says failed and all the sound devices have an explanation mark next to them.

Sorry Ian - missed the 32 bit!

What I'd do then is try to update driver and point to a DP DVD which has both XP/Vista drivers on and see if it picks it up.

Surprised that HP driver not Ok, for all their faults HP provide drivers that generally run well.

As a thought - Will it run the HP diagnostics or Update service? This might put the most suitable driver on?

Also - it might be worth trying to change resources on sound just to see if its a conflict thats not obvious

Nothing has worked :( Panicing now as I have to get it fixed before the funeral on Monday. I know this sounds awful but I really think I may have to do a N&P :(.

I will give the client two options, an N&P or it will have to be in the workshop for a few more days.

Exactly what error code does driver give? Logs must provide some clue I'd have thought

When you delete in device manager did you uninstall drivers and let vista put them back?

Only other thing I can think if is to go into safe mode and delete all sound devices and game devices from there including hidden and and removed items.

If your pushed for time maybe give someone temp remote access to help out.

Sorry for your loss earlier so a help might be able to stave off nuke. Something to consider.

When you uninstalled the drivers did you instruct it to delete them when it uninstalls them? There is usually an additional tick box.

Also have a look Programs and Features for any Connexant, or other 3rd party sound software.

DCGPX beat me to it :)

Yep deleted it. The only thing I did see on one attempt is I got an error message something of the lines of "registry entry corrupt" so I could delete them and see if that works.

I will check the registry now to see if anything looks wrong.

The system logs are not working (so something else to sodding fix) however he did say he had some viruses so I am also thinking they may have damaged something.

Currently cloning the drive in case I do end up with a N&P.

Safe mode is not a bad idea, I will try that after cloning.

Here is the exact message

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Sadly not it said something on the lines of "something is missing maybe in the registry, click here to send to Microsoft for solutions"

I will just cope and paste the message to my USB stick :) I will reply back in a couple of minutes.

Retry this and say yes, then look at detailed report it wants to send, might give a pointer.

If your cloning then have you tried SFC? Or an in place repair ?

Time consuming but hints of logs not working you maybe right to say something else has changed!
