No sound playback devices - vista

SFC is another option to consider, I will post the send log to see if that gives any hints. *edit just tried, and nothing happens*

My logical brain isn't very switched on at the moment due to suffering from RSI and the funeral which I have go to on Monday, not the best time for a tricky bugger :o

Its sodding SP1 too, so to do SFC I will have to slip stream my Vista disc as I only have SP0 and SP2 handy.

This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service subkey. Here are some things that you can try to resolve this problem.

Uninstall and reinstall the driver

Uninstall the driver from Device Manager and scan for new hardware to install the driver again.

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.
On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions.
Restart your computer.
Open Device Manager, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes. Follow the instructions.
Revert to the most recent successful registry configuration

Can you check or maybe try kill all then try to install driver in case it's being stopped because of a service?

Convince the client to upgrade to Win7. :) Vista was a mistake. Most Vista problems are solved by either installing XP or Win7 :D
ME sold XP and Vista sold Win7

Had a similar situation a while back. After working a number of hours and not getting any relief, I simply installed a separate $20 sound card and it worked just fine. (Never did figure out why the onboard sound card wouldn't work.)

Unless there's some reason why you HAVE to use the onboard sound, cut your losses and move on.
