i boot the pc up and it does the POST but then stops and says.....

NTLDR MISSING.

and thats it, restart and the same happens.

im still new to this so dont know alot of techy stuff to do with it.

The persons pc it i doesnt have the install discs and so cannot do a system restore, any oher ideas? much thanks!

Also if i wiped the pc and started from scratch but put my copy of xp on her machine would it still work?

NTLDR means NT Boot loader, The source windows is trying to boot from is either corrupt or not working, This could be either a CD drive or Hard Drive,

Try a new CD drive and see if that rectifies the problem, I would then look at the hard drive and test it using hitachi Drive fitnes to see its in good working order.Could also be the CD itself.

Loading your windows to a clients machine is illegal, But you could use a OEM Copy and use her licence key if theres a sticker on the tower somewhere which there normally is.

Boot from an XP disk into Recovery Console and replace the missing or corrupt NTLDR from the installation disk.

If the user can't find their license or if it doesn't have an OEM license sticker with the key on the case of the computer, they'll need to buy a new license. You could download/install the installation for XP w/ SP3 and leave the product key blank. It'd give them 30 days to try XP and provide a key to activate it.

If you don't know how an operating system should boot, I'm not sure how you think you can fix one that doesn't. I hope this is a learning experience and not paid work for a trusting customer?

You don't need the operating system DVD to do a system restore and in any case this will not fix the problem.

chkdsk /r may be enough to get it booting again, you should try that before you randomly start throwing install disks at it.

This is really very basic stuff, this must be endusernibble instead of technibble
If you googled the problem you will find step by step instructions like this:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the computer and restart.

2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.

3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.

4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.

5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.

6. Copy the file below to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying the file from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\

7. Once the file has been successfully copied, exit and remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Thread reported as an End User issue. Hopefully it will be closed and the OP banned. Check his post history; he comes by every month or two with one of these.

Dave, try Majorgeeks or Tomshardware. This is not the forum for you.
No offense to you, but this is a forum for computer repair professionals, not a place where you come to ask them questions.

You know this happens to me all the time, I can never figure out how to fix it.

Also my computers clock keeps reseting to 12:00 every time I unplug it, Do you think I need to reload Windows.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Dave, what you really should do is learn more about how system files work before you start working on other people's PCs. I recommend that you go out and find a copy of http://www.amazon.com/MCSA-Self-Paced-Training-70-270-Pro-Certification/dp/0735621527 and start reading.

Suggesting wiping and reinstalling windows based on the error you're getting is like suggesting buying a new car because you have a flat tire. I know you said you don't know a lot, but this book will help you a lot in getting some knowledge that you need to know.

While I'm at it, for hardware I recommend: http://www.amazon.com/Upgrading-Rep...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281213664&sr=1-1

Sorry Vdub.. From what your experiencing, I think its the ID ten T error.. and you ideally need to have the box, your pc came in, and return it to the seller. Either that, or go out and buy a new pc.. I have one, you can have, its a 466Mhz, with 16Mb simm, and a 840Mb Hard drive, and it has one of these new fangled things called a Floppy drive!!.. It doesnt have a CD rom, as these havent been invented yet.. And its yours for a amazing $1999.99 only!!!:rolleyes:

Easy now, D-D-D-Dynamic Dave doesn't do 'techy stuff' books, he's quite happy to F-F-F-uck his way through life.
