O365 - Forward email to external address & do not keep a copy.

I know in O365 it's super easy to setup forwarding under EAC > Recipients > Mailboxes > Edit Mailbox > Mailbox Features > Mail Flow > Enable Forwading > Select Forwarding Acount > Uncheck deliver to both forwarding and mailbox.

I have a computer who is being purchased by another computer and they want to setup the current emails from Company A (being purchased) to forward to Company B (the purchaser).

Company B is obviously external to company A.

How do I setup forwarding to an external address per email account and not keep a copy for itself? Eventually I will migrate the contents of company A to the corresponding company B email address but I don't want duplicates.

Why are you asking how to do a process you've just explained how to perform?

The forwarding feature you just described doesn't care about the location of the target.

Convert to shared mailbox to free the license, setup the forward, delete the shared mailbox post migration.

This forwarding only allows forwarding to internal addresses

Ah figured it out ... the external address has to be added into the contacts under EAM > Recipients > Contacts > Add mail contact

Then you are able to forward externally.... I think

Also FYI, the forwarding is quicker to get to on the Mail props right under the Users account properties (saving you an extra several clicks and 30 seconds navigating to the EAC).

I'd do the approach Rob mentioned above...just convert to shared mailbox....which preserves the mailbox. Disable the user account, archive OD data if needed, remove license...done.

Or...if for some reason a shared mailbox cannot be done, archive the users email however you want. Delete the user account (thus deleting the mailbox). Give it a bit..and then add a contact to that "new" email address. Now create a distribution group of the old email address, forward to that external contact.

Sorry I missed the bit where you dug all the way into the EAC... yeah in there you need a contact to forward to.

But, if get into the active user's section of the 365 admin portal, click the user, go to the mail tab, and use the forwarding option there... you can untick the keep box, and type in an external address and click save. That mechanism doesn't care.

Got it ... Ok maybe I'll do that instead ... I do have the contacts setup though
