Odd Issue - laptop loses connection

Have a Toshiba L-50-B laptop running 8.1 every ten minutes it loses internet connectivity - avg time 10 minutes.
The client modem is a Technicolor/Thompson piece of crap - standard issue here with NBN. This Toshiba disconnects but other laptops and devices do not?

The others are simple smartphones or ipads and and a Windows 7 laptop. This is what I have tried so far -

  • Sfc/ scannow
  • Checked Services & Msconfig
  • Malware check
  • Reset winsock
  • Uninstall all other wifi drivers and reinstall new
  • Disable other network devices inc, Bluetooth
  • No AV installed just defender and security ok
  • Resetting laptop to default settings via O/S Full
  • Updated BIOS

They stated they had a tech onsite to check the NBN Box and tech stated it was okThough When I was having the issues the Optical light was flashing green and as was the wifi on the modem. At that time I checked the event logs in the modem and it stated some error -

"DHCC lease ip-address xxx.xx.xx.xxx bound to intf ipoeWAN"

I created a batch file in the meantime to refreshDNS - ReleaseIP and RenewIP for them until I can get back tomorrow.

What I am doing at tomorrow when I go back - as they didnt have account logon info -

  • Use another modem/router to test onsite

If you can get it to run stable safe mode w/networking that may show something missed (or corrupted) in the operating system. That may help further isolate the issue.
 
Pants - Though using a full reset of the O/S should rule out those, and I ran sfc /scannow with no discrepancies also.
Geeks - I thought of that but occurs with just Ethernet as well - even with wifi adapter disabled.

It seems to be related to just this particular laptop:confused:

It is the DNS which is the issue I think, as the flushdns corrects it.

It is an unmanageable modem thats provided via an ISP in Australia supported via idiots in singapore, there is no way to upgrade firmware or advanced operations.

oh you must mean Telstra then?

I recommend you throw it out and install a proper modem/router.

AliceKlaar is referring to the DHCP scope or IP address pool in the router settings. Make sure the range of addresses it can hand out is large enough and/or that the lease times aren't too long.

However, if flushdns corrects it, I would try entering DNS servers manually first, eg 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Ah, well, problem solved. Just tell them to pray for a fix :rolleyes: ;)
 
On the other hand.... if it was the will of their chosen deity for the darn thing to to break... best leave it alone, just in case, y'know

Perfecto! Changing the DNS to googles servers did the trick. I did try that yesterday but stupid me put the incorrect secondary in o_O

Ok so you were having DNS issues, not connectivity issues. The way I interpreted your original post was that you lost all Internet connectivity on the laptop and that there was a yellow <!> over the network icon in the Taskbar , or something.

Glad it's working. Maybe get a router and set DNS settings there? We are in the states, but I have ATT DSL with a combo modem/router. What I did was allow my ATT unit to only give out limited IP's, and locked it down so you can't see it as a network. Attached my router, gave it a static IP from the ATT unit, told router to handle DHCP, google dns settings. Working good.

Interesting thing, we pay for 12mbps, our internet when I tried to use their device was getting like half that on wifi. Hence why I did my configuration. With my router doing things, 10-12 is normal. Much closer to what I'm paying for.

Always good to go look at the reviews for the model # that the ISP gives you on Amazon or the like. If they sell you the package deal and handle your phone service too, they have to cleave to certain standards. If the WiFi doesn't quite make the grade, many might not notice as long as it gets them 3+Meg on the download. If it hits half of 12... for most you're not going to hear complaints unless they go to Speedtest and start asking questions.
 
Phone is no issue. We actually converted our phones to cell phones. Our business number is still a local landline number, but ported to a cell.
