My client gave me an old machine and just asked for it to be wiped cleaned and to have XP reinstalled. I installed XP SP2. Here are the machine specs:

Board: Intel D845GBV
CPU: Pentium 1.6 GHz
RAM: 256 MB

All drivers were downloaded and installed except for two which have something to do with USB 2.0. The device manager shows no errors.

I can't get the internet to connect. I downloaded the Intel Lan driver for the board....Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection which shows up under device manager with no issues. Under add/remove programs it added two items:

1. Intel PRO Network Adapters and Drivers
2. Intel PROSet

I noticed the BIOs was out of date so I updated that successfully, but it did not resolve the issue. (I am able to get the machine to connect to the internet via a PCI ethernet card.) Under network connections it just says Acquiring Network Connection.

Any suggestions?

boot up in your favourite boot cd ubcd or minipe etc. then check if the network card will work then if not u can safely say its a hardware problem. if it does work then its a software. either way u rule one or the other out this way

Update:

I connected it again because I noticed there was a Intel ProSet program that had some diagnostics tools. I ran the first test which gave a pass to the following:

EEPROM
Control Registers
PHY Loopback
MAC Loopback
Link

Then I ran the advanced tests. The first was Sender-Send packet to a Responder. It send many packets but Packets received stayd at 0 and Send/Receive Failures stayed at 0. I stopped it after a while. The second test was Responder-Echo packets from Sender. This recorded 5 Send/Receive Failures at which time I stopped it.

I check the status of the network connection and to my surprise it says I have been connected for 6 minutes....hmmm...I try the internet...the connection starts sending packets but the received number does not keep up. For example, it was 29 packets sent and only 5 recieved. I assume they should be equal? The web page did not load. The speed is 100 Mbps.
