I have a client who wants an old computer on Windows 7 running office 2013 to transfer the email to a new system running Windows 8, office 365.

I've been trying to export the two accounts on their 2013 system so I can import them to the new. So far I've been able to export, ironically, the larger account (about 13 GB file) to a backup file for import. However, the smaller one keeps failing, and leaves me with a file of a few GB (it probably needs another 1 or two GB to finish, guessing though) short of completing. It fails with:
Code:
The operation failed. The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart outlook.

So far I've run the repair tool, restarted outlook several times, emptied the autocomplete for addresses in the send section, and still it keeps failing.

Any insight please?

No insight, but if you setup the Office 365 account on the PC that keeps failing the export, then just drag and drop the emails and folders into the Office 365 hosted account, then that will work.

Never used 365 myself. With 16GB or so for a PST file, is something like that a viable option? Will that much data transfer to the new system, and just signing on to the account on the new system have all the old info available?

Before your response, I was able to selectively just export the failing account's inbox folder, and another archived folder, but haven't yet attempted importing to the new system.

pop or imap?

If it's pop, you can just copy the pst file, you don't need to export it.

If imap...just set it up on the new computer.

That doesn't take into account the old data, which is the issue here.

The pst file has two accounts associated in it, both pop and imap.

Her point is that the main IMAP mailbox and subfolders do not need to be migrated. Setting it up in 365 will bring it all back. The only thing you need to worry about are local stores - POP and any local exports made from the IMAP account. In those cases the files should already be PST's so you can just copy them over.

Got ahold of the customer. Turns out she frigged it all up.

Apparently it's migrating from windows live account to office 365, but I saw outlook 2013 on the old system. She stated that her import from / to outlook didn't work and wanted help with that. Spending all this time on wasted stuff now. Now it's two steps back, looking to migrate from live to office 365!

About ready to just bill and say here
