Outlook Mail Account Recovery from Hirens or HDD connected externally

Hi there,

I am a big use of MailPV (and a great article was released recently here by Derrick Wlodarz). As you know, a lot of the time we need to restore email accounts after a re-install. I use Fabs which is great for backing up the email messages but it doesnt backup the mail settings (AFAIK)!

MailPV is cracking software and is used extensively by me but it cannot recover mail settings if the hard disk is being accessed a Boot CD (such as Hirens) or from a hard disk connected via USB.

Does anyone know of any outlook / outlook express recovery software that can recover mail settings from a non-booting machine, specifically I need to recover SMTP, IMAP, POP, username, password and if authentication is in use, ports etc.

I think OE settings are stored in the registry and so the software must look at the old registry for this which is why MaikPV cannot do this as it can only read the local registry of the boot machine.

Thanks

Paul

good tip, this worked well until the hard disk failed (it was on its way out!) so never got the chance to see if the password is recoverable. I will update with my findings shortly.

Thanks again

I'm almost certain that Fab's backsup and restores the messages and settings. Usually the only thing we have to do after a restore is enter the password.

^^^ This. Have used Fabs many times to backup/restore email settings, and it does restore everything except the pw.

I also use Nir's MailPassView before doing a N&P to ensure I have a listing of the various paramegters (including password!)

Unless I am using fabs (version 4) wrong (by accepting all the defaults) I dont think I have ever seen mail accounts restored needing just a password.

I will check with the next backup I do.

For this instance, I needed to find the mail account settings (username, pop, smtp, password etc) for an old outlook express install on a hard disk from a failed computer that I was going to set up using Windows Live Mail.

Thanks

I use Fabs alot and I usually only need to enter the password manually. It will usually do the PST and all the mail settings except the password for you. I have on occasions had to go and manually choose where the PST was located, and I think on those occasions I had forgotten to run it as administrator, which makes a huge difference in many aspects of Fabs working properly.

FYI in Fabs i believe the section which handles mail account details is called MAPI Profile
