Power Adapter Question

My blood pressure monitor uses a 6V 600 milliamp AC adapter.
It also can use 4 x AAA batteries when not plugged in to the AC adapter.

Recently, the AC adapter failed (it's out of warranty) and a replacement from the manufacture is $98 + $12.95 postage.

I think this is exorbitant!

I have an AC adapter of the same voltage but the amperage is slightly higher. It is 6V 800 milliamp.

So, my question is, can I use this adapter or will it damage the device?

Thanks

Ummm - Those adapters are not regulated power supplies. The voltage varies depending on the load. Plug one in with no load and the voltage will be much higher than rated. Using a different one that is close but not the same is usually not a problem. Using one that is rated 1,000 ma to replace one rated at 200 ma could cause problems. Using one rated at 800 to replace a 600 shouldn't be an issue.

I just plugged in a 12v 1,000ma adapter and it is outputting 17.4 volts no load. I plugged in a switching power adapter (same 12v 1,000ma) and it is outputting 7.53 volts no load. The switching adapters are tiny compared to the old-style adapters and why the lesser voltage I don't know. I haven't gone down that rabbit hole yet.
