So I was reading another thread in this section andf I wanted to try a very light linux edition just for surfing and chose puppy live cd, much for the same reasons as discussed in the thread that it's that light, it doesnt even need a hard drive.
However when I try to boot with live cd I get the PUP_411.sfs not found (file name varies for each edition I try)
Im using my desktop.

After googling the issue ive followed suggestions including:
Ive tried changing the fille name, all file names on the cd, ive tried 3-4 editions of puppy, with HD, without HD, disconnecting any unnecessary stuff like usb drives and nothing works.
Not being very au fait with Linux im out of ideas.
Can anyone suggest a fix?

First make sure your pup_411 file is in your /puppy directory. You could try putting a copy in C:\ as well.

If that doesn't work, look at your grub.lst.

You'll probably have something like this:

title Puppy Linux 4.11
kernel (hd0,0)/puppy411/vmlinuz PMEDIA=idehd PDEV1=hda1 psubdir=puppy411
initrd (hd0,0)/puppy411/initrd.gz
boot

Though since you're booting a live cd it won't be (hd0,0). Try removing the PDEV1 variable. Again, since it's a live cd you won't be able to change it on your current media unless it's rewritable. If you have a spare usb stick lying around, you can boot off it too.

First, use the newest Lucid version of Puppy. Put simply, the slacko one sucks in my opinion. Burn the ISO to disk (using Image Burn). The CD WILL boot. From there, there are plenty of tutorial on how to install it on to USB or Hard drive. Hint: Use the "install" icon on the Puppy desktop.

I had bad luck booting puppy from Cd the first try did not boot, the second would boot, however it was very jumpy and the cursor was going all over the place. Just to unstable for me. Got a 4gb thumb drive and it worked great. There is a bit of a learning curve on installing and using Puppy but don't give up it's a great little operating system.I carry it everywhere in my service kit. It's very customizable and quick. Make sure you get the latest Lucid version.

At the risk of putting my head on the block, if you're not 'au fait' with Linux, Puppy is possibly not a great starting point.

Personally I would reference it as "the OS you would revert to if the machine was too old and slow to run any proper distro"

If you can run something with a bit more behind it you will probably find it more fun (and less frustrating) to use. Generally speaking, Linux has fairly low system requirements. If you have 512mb+ of ram there, it might be worth playing the field a bit - even if it is only for web surfing.

Im not saying Puppy is a 'bad' OS, just that its not a very strong contender compared to other Linux-y offerings that are a bit more sophisticated in design, and offer more possibilities of creature comforts and ease of use.

Cheers guys, the only thing im doing differently is using magiciso and not imgburn...but cant see that would make a difference really.

I wanted a light distro to put on a 'borrow' laptop with no hdd, just so certain regular customers can continue to surf net while I fix them up for few days.

Just an idea really, and as usual got massivley side tracked trying to make it work.
Ive got lucid version d/l now.
Thanks :)
