Client has a Canon ImageCLASS MF634CDW color laser printer.

He asked me for help fixing it as it has been printing with streaks. I figured that it could use a new drum (I discovered that each toner cartridge has its own drum, which must make the cartridges extra expensive). I turned on the anti-streak feature and shook the toner cartridges several times and ran the built-in maintenance functions and none of that helped. His cartridges are refurbished and a few years old so I recommended replacing them.

I wanted to see what the condition was of the drums, but could not find anything on the touchscreen or on his computer. Would I be able to access more information via the Remote UI web interface? He is using the printer with a USB cable. My understanding is that he'd have to plug in an Ethernet cable and connect it to his router to access Remote UI.

Maybe there's no way to check the status of the drums because they are built into the cartridges. I rarely work on printers so I don't have a whole lot of experience with fixing them.

You should be able to find software to clean the print heads of the cartridges. If not, gently use a soft cloth to manually clean them. In future, I would recommend brand new genuine Brother cartridges. Refurbished is cheaper but they end up having issues. I've found out the hard way, myself.

A picture is worth a thousand words. First step. is to do a front panel test print. Print test page but pull the power plug 2-3 seconds after the page feed starts. Pull the page and see if the line is there or not. Generally the path is the toner drums>transfer belt>paper>fuser

I tend to stay away from printers unless they are the large corporate laser printers which I then send my customer to a local office supply that does leasing and printer repair. New cartridges (aftermarket) are reasonable for this printer. (I like LD Products)

I have a Color ImageCLASS MFC656cDW and I don't think there is a way to check anything about the drums because, as you note, they're a part of the actual toner cartridge assembly.

I'd think that streaking would be where the fuser would come in.

The thermal transfer drum is fubar, one would need to replace it. You can try to remove the drum and clean with isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth to remove streaks. Though if they are thermally imprinted not much can be done.
